Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
LONDON, ONTARIO - Jeff Flagg hit a solo homer in the top of the sixth inning to knot the score at 3-3, but the London Rippers scratched across a win in the bottom of the eighth to take a 4-3 win.
The Beach Bums scored single runs in the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead. In the first Ryan Still led off with a walk, followed by a Kyle Colligan single. A groundout moved the runners to second and third before Chase Burch drove home Still with a sacrifice fly.
In the second, Sean Gusrang doubled to lead off the inning. Two batters later, Kyle Eveland singled to left to score Gusrang and give the Beach Bums the 2-0 edge. London countered with a run in the bottom of the inning as a Jim Vahalik groundout scored Mark Samuelson, who had led off the inning with a walk.
London tied the game in the third as Clifton Thomas led off with a walk and stole second before being singled in by Joash Brodin. The Rippers would take the lead in the fifth as with runners on the corners, Brodin grounded a ball to first base. Burch stepped on the bag for the force, but Aaron Glaum was able to cross the plate before TC could tag out Steven Cardullo with the final out of the inning.
With two out and nobody on in the sixth, Flagg came through with his heroics, driving a ball to deep centerfield for his 13th homer of the season to tie the score at 3-3. A win was not in the offing, unfortunately, as London scored on a suicide squeeze in the eighth to come away with the winning run.
Jamie Richmond (5-2) got the win, going the distance for the Rippers. Scott Dunn (1-1) took the loss for the Beach Bums.
Offensively for Traverse City, Gusrang had a pair of doubles and a triple. Colligan had three hits as well and Jose Vargas had a seventh inning single to extend his hitting streak to 13 games.
The rubber game of the series is on Sunday as All-Star Reid Kelly (6-1, 2.77) goes for the Beach Bums against Brandon Sinnery (1-1, 5.48) for London. Coverage on Sunny Country 101.9 will begin at 12:40 outside of a scheduled 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
