July 7, 2012 - Frontier League (FL)
Evansville Otters News Release
(FLORENCE, KENTUCKY) - b0 Evansville scored four runs in the first inning, only to lose the lead, re-gain it and hold on for a 7-6 road win on Saturday night.
The Otters rallied quickly against Freedom right-hander Daniel DeSimone. Outfielder DeAngelo Mack hit the big two-run double in the inning as Florence immediately found themselves trailing by four runs.
The Freedom would rally back though against Otter left-hander Matt Crim. The pitcher was seeking his first win of the season, but he allowed five runs in the bottom of the third, including a three-run go-ahead home run from Drew Rundle.
Down 6-5, Evansville would tie the game in the next inning on an RBI single from outfielder Matt Sheely and a deep run-producing double from infielder Taylor Black.
The Otters also received an insurance run in the seventh inning when infielder Steve Marino hit his first professional home run, a no-doubter to deep left field.
Trailing 7-5, Florence staged a rally in the seventh inning, taking advantage of two Evansville errors to pull within a run. Reliever David Kubiak was able to get out of that jam and closer Eric Massingham left the bases loaded in the ninth for the win.
Evansville narrowly holds on 7-6 in the series-tying win.
The Otters improve to 20-27 with the win as the Freedom end their four-game winning streak and drop to 27-20 .
Crim (1-6) earns his first win of the season, allowing five runs over 7.0 innings. The loss goes to DeSimone (2-5) who lasted just 4.0 innings and surrendered five runs. Massingham now has 11 saves this season.
Sheely finished with three hits in the win as Black and Marino both ended the night with two hits.
Evansville will now meet Florence on Sunday in the final game of the series. It will also be the last game of the first half for each of these teams. Right-hander Bryce Morrow (3-4, 4.94 Earned Run Average) will be on the mound for Evansville as he will be opposed by lefty Andres Caceras (4-1, 4.91 ERA). First pitch will be 6:05 p.m. EDT at the Home of the Florence Freedom.
