Normal CornBelters News Release
JOLIET - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, scored early and rode a big fifth inning to break a six-game losing streak with a 6-4 win over the Joliet Slammers on Saturday night at Silver Cross Field.
The CornBelters dented the scoreboard right away in the first inning when Ty Wiesemeyer led off with a single and went to second on a walk to Steven Felix. A fielder's choice sent the runners to second and third, and Wiesemeyer scored when a comebacker to the pitcher was misplayed. Sam Judah singled through the right side of the diamond to score Felix to put the Belters ahead 2-0.
The Slammers tied the game in the fourth with a pair of unearned runs. Joliet led off with their first hit followed by a walk, but a throwing error and a single tied the game at 2-2.
The Belters regained the lead in the fifth when Pat Trettel led off with a double, went to third on a fielder's choice and scored on Sam Judah's second RBI base hit of the night. Judah went to third when Pat Dockendorf walked and Robert Brooks was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Ty Wiesemeyer walked to put the Belters ahead 4-2. Chico Gomez doubled inside the third base bag to score two more to put the Belters ahead 6-2.
Joliet cut the Belters lead to 6-3 in their half of the fifth when Patrick Norris led off with a home run to right field.
The Slammers got a run back in the eighth inning when they loaded the bases and scored on a fielder's choice to cut the Belters lead to 6-4.
Ryan Krumlauf (3-2) won his third consecutive start with a seven-inning outing. Marshall Schuler pitched a scoreless ninth for his fifth save. Jim Schult (3-3) took the loss.
The CornBelters conclude the first half of the season on Sunday with a 2:05 p.m. first pitch in Joliet. Right-handers battle in the series finale as Tyler Lavigne (3-3, 4.32 ERA) starts on the hill for the CornBelters against the Slammers' Steven Maxwell (4-4, 3.83 ERA).
