JOLIET SLAMMERS (19-27) vs. NORMAL CORNBELTERS (15-29)
Saturday, July 7 - 6:05 p.m. CT
Silver Cross Field - Joliet, IL
Game #47 - Home Game #26 (19-27), (9-16)
RHP #28 Jim Schult (3-2, 4.50 ERA) vs. RHP #3 Ryan Krumlauf (2-2, 2.77 ERA)
Last time out.
The Slammers broke their four-game skid on Friday night at Silver Cross Field with bats firing on all cylinders in a 9-2 win over the last-place Normal CornBelters. Erik Lis put Joliet ahead in the home half of the first on a deep solo home run to make it 1-0. Joliet tacked on another four runs on to the lead in the third inning when Lis and Abel Nieves brought in two runs each to make it 5-0. In the fifth, with the bases loaded, Josh Lyon hit a sacrifice fly to give the Slammers a six-run lead. Normal showed signs of life in the seventh inning on a quick rally off a Yasel Gomez RBI single that brought two runs across. Joliet powered ahead with more runs late in the contest when Nieves and Matt Mirabal knocked run-scoring base hits to make it 9-2. But it was Jacob Sanchez that made waves in his professional debut, tossing six shutout innings for Joliet while giving up just five hits and fanning three.
For Starters.
Jim Schult is making his fifth start of the season tonight. He has been brilliant recently as Schult sports 2-0 record with a 1.37 ERA over his last three outings. Schult began the year in the bullpen for the Slammers. He brings professional experience to the fold as the Eastern Connecticut State alum spent 2011 in the Canadian-American Association with the NYSL Federals. The traveling team struggled but Schult finished the season with 10 starts and his ERA was the best on the team among pitchers with 10 or more starts that season.
Lis heating up.
Erik Lis had eight hits over his past nine at bats. He hit his fourth home run of the season yesterday to tie Zach Mandelblatt and Abel Nieves for the team lead.
Abel is able (especially with runners in scoring position).
All-Star Abel Nieves has done it all this year but he's especially dangerous with runners in scoring position. Nieves is hitting a team leading .533 in 30 at bats in that situation.
Going for the series win.
With a win tonight the Slammers would clinch this three-game series against Normal. The Slammers last won a series June 20-22 when they took two of three from Schaumburg.
Hey now, you're an All-Star!
The Slammers have three representatives in the 2012 Frontier League All-Star Game. Hector Pellot, 25, is currently hitting .294 with two home runs and 17 RBI. He has scored a team-leading 35 runs, smacked a team best 14 doubles and has drawn a team-high 29 walks. Pellot was added to the All-Star team by West Division manager Jamie Bennett. Abel Nieves and Amalio Diaz will also participate in the 2012 All-Star Game on Wednesday, July 11 at 7:05 p.m. in Normal, IL. Nieves was selected as a starter in the outfield for the West Division while Diaz was named to the pitching staff. Nieves, 26, has played every position for the Slammers this season except for center field, catcher and pitcher. He is currently hitting a team-leading .362 with four home runs and 25 RBI. Diaz, 25, has struck out 21 batters in 19.2 innings and has nine saves to his credit. The right-hander currently sports a 2.75 ERA.
Home woes.
The Slammers are 9-16 at Silver Cross Field. Their home record is the worst in the Frontier League.
Error indicator.
The Slammers are 5-21 in games when they make an error. They are 14-6 in games when they do not.
Out-hit.
When the Slammers out-hit an opponent they are 16-6, but when the opponent out-hits the Slammers Joliet has a record of 2-20.
