Ontario Reign News Release
BOISE, Calif. - The Ontario Reign (44-16-3-4), back-to-back Pacific Division Champions and proud affiliate of the NHL's 2012 Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings, earned their club record 44th win of the season with a 5-3 victory over the Idaho Steelheads (42-18-1-6) at CenturyLink Arena before 3,919 fans.
The Steelheads were first on the board with a power-play goal from Brett Robinson. The forward scored five hole on Mike Condon in the Reign goalie's professional debut.
Matt Register lit the lamp for the Reign with a power-play goal from the high slot at 12:56. Adrian Van de Mosselaer earned his first point of the night with the assist, Kyle Kraemer had the secondary helper.
Before the first frame was over, Brodie Sheahan pushed the Reign past the Steelheads scoring off a big rebound from the pads of Josh Robinson. Sheahan was waiting in front the net to gather the puck off his brother Brock Sheahan's original shot. Newcomer Jake Hauswirth earned his first Reign point with the other assist.
Idaho tied the game early in the second period with a goal from Tyler Gron just 1:44 into play.
Derek Couture restored the Reign's lead with a power-play goal, his 13th of the season breaking the Reign's all-time record for the most power-play goals in a single season. Register fired a slap shot from the point which was tipped in by Couture. Van de Mosselaer earned his second point of the night with the other assist.
Kraemer put Ontario ahead by two goals as Couture and Brock Sheahan set him up to poke it past Robinson who was screened by a number of bodies in the crease.
With two consecutive penalties to the Reign, Ontario was down three skaters to five for about a minute and a half. As D.J. King came out of the box for the first infraction, Gron scored his second of the night on the man-advantage.
In the final minute of regulation, the Steelheads pulled Robinson for an extra attacker. Brady Calla sent a shot down the length of the ice to score an empty-net insurance goal for the Reign.
Condon earned his first professional win in his debut stopping 28 of 31 shots; Robinson took the loss with 35 saves on 39 shots.
