Greenville Swamp Rabbits News Release
Orlando, FL: The Road Warriors inched closer to a playoff birth with a 5-4 shootout win against the Orlando Solar Bears.
Just 1:47 in, Sean Berkstresser had a fighting rematch from last night against Edward Levens. The fight was on each player's first shift. Berkstresser landed a few haymakers and ducked under a punch to land one final blow before the players tumbled to the ice. The Road Warriors found the net first with a goal from forward Marc-Olivier Vallerand. Vallerand scored on his own rebound for his 21st goal of the year. Lee Baldwin and Brendan Connolly collected the helpers. With 25 seconds left in the first, Olivier Fortier tied the game at one with a tap-in. Dale Mahovsky drew Road Warriors' goaltender Connor Knapp out of the net and gave Fortier a pass for his 10th of the year. Kyle Beattie tallied the other assist on the goal.
Orlando grabbed a 2-1 lead with another goal from Fortier. A shorthanded breakaway gave the forward his second of the game beating Knapp five-hole. Jordie Johnston tied the game at two with a one-timer that was shot top shelf over Patrick Killeen's shoulder. Orlando took the lead back just 16 seconds later with a goal from Mark Nemec. Nemec was signed this morning from the University of Maine and registered his first professional goal with a shot from the point. Traffic in front took the Knapp's sight away for a 3-2 Orlando lead. Johnston tied the game at three with a goal after the faceoff. The rookie forward won the faceoff to himself and fired a quick shot past Killeen for his 22nd of the year.
Vallerand scored his second goal of the game halfway through the third period with a blistering wrist shot. The goal put Greenville ahead for the first time in the two-game series by a 4-3 score. Alain Goulet tied the game with just 55 seconds left to bring the game to overtime. The Road Warriors pounded Killeen with six shots in the extra period but were not able to score. Knapp saw two shots; denying both. Johnston and Connolly scored for the Road Warriors in the shootout while Knapp saved all four opportunities to lead Greenville to a 5-4 victory. Knapp improved to 5-5-0 with 30 saves. Killeen was the losing goaltender with 28 saves.
