South Carolina Stingrays News Release

North Charleston, S.C. - The South Carolina Stingrays, celebrating 20 seasons of hockey in the Lowcountry and proud ECHL affiliate of the Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League (NHL), announced today that former Stingrays forward and team captain Matt Scherer will be inducted into the Stingrays Hall of Fame Friday during the first intermission of the Stingrays game against the Gwinnett Gladiators at 7:05 p.m. The Stingrays also announced that defenseman Scooter Vaughan is the winner of the 2013 Jerry Zucker Community Service Award.

"It is a tremendous honor and I am very moved that people think that much of me," said Scherer. "It is something I take with a tremendous amount of privilege. I couldn't be happier to be associated with something as great as the Stingrays Hall of Fame. Lauren and I feel so grateful that we had the opportunity to come to Charleston and be a part of the best hockey organization in the ECHL."

Scherer served as the Stingrays' team captain from 2009-12, played five consecutive seasons (2007-12) with the organization and is a member off the 2009 Kelly Cup Championship team. The Seattle, Washington, native ranks seventh all-time in games played as a Stingray with 308 and won the Jerry Zucker Community Service Award in 2010. During his career with the Stingrays, Scherer totaled 65 goals and 62 assists for 127 points.

"For the last five years, Matt Scherer has been a big part of the Stingrays organization," Stingrays President Rob Concannon said. "Not only a leader on the ice, he carried his role off the ice. He truly represented what our organization stands for. Like many former players, Matt has closed the door on his hockey career, but will remain a large part of this community and he is now a deserving member of the Stingrays Hall of Fame."

Scherer joins Jared Bednar, Nate Kiser, Julie Thoennes, Jason Fitzsimmons, Jerry Zucker, Brett Marietti, Dave Seitz, Ed Courtenay, Kirk Daubenspeck, Concan-non, Rick Vaive, Mark Bavis and Brad Dexter in the Stingrays Hockey Hall of Fame.

In 46 games with the Stingrays this season, Vaughan netted four goals and 13 assists for 17 points. Last season, the Placentia, California, native appeared in 20 games with the Wheeling Nailers of the ECHL adding six points (one goal, five assists). Vaughan joins Johann Kroll, Scherer, Jordan Pietrus and Spencer Carbery as winners of the award.
