Ontario Reign News Release
Cedar Park, TX - The Ontario Reign (32-14-3-1) completed the six-game regular-season series sweep of the Texas Stars (32-20-4-3) with a 5-2 victory at Cedar Park Center Saturday evening. Forward Jonny Brodzinski scored a goal and two assists and forward Sean Backman added two power-play goals.
The Reign kicked off the scoring 8:27 in the contest when Brodzinski grabbed a pass from forward Kris Newbury and snapped a shot over the glove of Stars netminder Maxime Lagace (L, 22 saves on 26 shots). Moments later, Backman made it a two-goal Reign lead with a power play goal at 10:25 with help from defenseman Vincent LoVerde and Brodzinski. The Stars jumped on the scoreboard late in the period as forward Curtis McKenzie slipped a backhanded shot past the left pad of Reign goalie Peter Budaj (W, 24 saves on 26 shots) at 14:37.
Backman added his second goal of the game, also on the power play, midway through the second period, ripping a shot past Lagace from the blue line. Newbury and Brodzinski added assists. With nine seconds left in the period, Budaj mishandled a rebound and placed the puck on the stick of forward Jason Dickenson who pulled the contest back within one goal.
In the third period, forward Jordan Samuels-Thomas suppressed the Stars attack with his 10th goal of the season to make 4-2 at 12:07 from forwards Justin Auger and Matt Leitner. Auger sealed the Reign victory with an empty-net goal at 18:41 from forward Nic Dowd. The Reign finished the game 2-for-5 on the power play while the Stars went 0-for-5.
The Reign continue a five-game road trip on Sunday, March 6 and Wednesday, March 9 against the San Antonio Rampage in San Antonio, Texas. Listen to all the action LIVE and for FREE on your favorite device at OntarioReign.com!
