Bridgeport Islanders News Release
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - Taylor Beck scored on the power play, but the Bridgeport Sound Tigers fell 4-1 to the Albany Devils on Sunday night at Webster Bank Arena. Stephon Williams stopped 23 of 27 shots in the loss.
The Devils were able to get on the board first when they opened up the scoring early in the first period. Ryan Kujawinski got the puck to the front of the crease from behind the net sliding it just past the left post where Graham Black was able to bury it far side on Williams.
Bracken Kearns nearly tied the game at one a piece when his shot rang the post, but an unfortunate redirection gave Albany a 2-0 lead at 13:52 of the first period. Rod Pelley knocked down the puck in front of the net that caught Williams out of position from a Marc-Andre Gragnani slap shot at the blue line.
Bridgeport was given a late opportunity to get on the board at the end of the first period with their first power play of the night, and were able to convert early in the second. Beck took a slapper from the right circle that trickled past Yann Danis with just one second remaining in the man advantage. Kearns and Carter Verhaeghe each racked up an assist on the goal.
The remainder of the second period was rather uneventful. The Sound Tigers were unable to convert on two consecutive power plays, but Williams and the penalty kill unit held together when facing their first penalty kill of the game.
Despite a prior stellar penalty kill performance, the Devils added to their lead in the middle of the third period when Paul Thompson found a hole on the power play. Brian O'Neill fed the puck to Gragnani at the point where he crossed it to Thompson at the left circle who fired it on net to make it a 3-1 game.
Less then three minutes later Thompson picked up an assist when Raman Hrabarenka increased Albany's lead to 4-1, once again on the power play. Thompson made a cross-ice pass to Hrabarenka between the blue line and the faceoff circles where his slap shot went top shelf on Williams.
At 13:37 of the third period the Sound Tigers were given a huge 5-on-3 power play opportunity. Despite firing a few shots toward the net, they were unable to shorten the Devils lead. Just after the expiration of the power play, Danis made a huge stop on a Connor Jones' breakaway opportunity.
The Sound Tigers frustration showed toward the end of the game. The third period came to an end after each team traded a couple of penalties. Bridgeport went 1-for-5 on the power play, while Albany went 2-for-4.
The Sound Tigers return to action when they take on the Hartford Wolf Pack Wednesday night at Webster Bank Arena. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m.
