Springfield Falcons News Release
Portland, ME - The Springfield Falcons allowed three goals in the third period to fall 4-2 on Sunday against the Portland Pirates.
The Falcons were awarded a five-on-three power play early in the game with penalties to Rocco Grimaldi and Brett Olsen. The momentum shifted as Wade Megan intercepted a Falcons rush through center and sped into the Falcons zone on a breakaway. Megan scored his eighth of the year past Josh Robinson to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead at 7:04. The unassisted shorthanded goal was the only score of the period. Robinson stopped 12 shots in the period while Pirates goaltender, Mike McKenna, stopped all nine shots.
Eric Selleck opened the second period with a goal to tie the game at one. His tenth of the season was scored on a wrist shot that beat McKenna glove-high. The goal, scored at 2:16, was assisted by Ross Mauermann. That was the only score of the period as the Pirates outshot the Falcons 15-10 in the stanza. Robinson turned aside several scoring chances in the period, including power play chances within the last three minutes.
Just 1:11 into the third period, Connor Brickley regained the Pirates lead for his fourth of the year with assists credited to Brett Olson and Cameron Gaunce. Rocco Grimaldi extended the lead at 7:58 with a slap shot past Robinson for his twelfth of the year. The goal was scored on the power play with assists from Mackenzie Weegar and Dylan Olsen. 3:01 later, Jordan Szwarz tightened the game to a 3-2 score with a shorthanded tally. His fifth of the year was scored on a one-timer with the play originating from a Laurent Dauphin steal at center ice. The Falcons pulled Robinson in attempts to tie the game but Grimaldi struck again into the empty net to seal the game with 1:05 left. Chase Balisy and Olsen assisted to close the scoring and give the Pirates a 4-2 win. Robinson made 38 saves in the losing effort. McKenna stopped 24 shots to move his record to 25-11-2.
