Jarry's 47 Saves Not Enough in 3-2 Loss to Bruins
February 28, 2016 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Tristan Jarry turned in one of the best performances of the season by a Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins' goalie on Sunday afternoon, but the rookie was still handed a 3-2 loss to the Providence Bruins.
Jarry made a career-high 47 saves against the Bruins, the most of any Penguins netminder this year, as his team dropped to 33-18-5-1 overall.
The league's power play went to work just 2:02 into the game, but it was Wilkes-Barre/Scranton that struck first thanks to a shorthanded goal by Carter Rowney at 2:41 of the first.
Buoyed by three man advantage opportunities, Providence peppered the Penguins' net with shots, but Tristan Jarry continuously shut the door with shining saves.
It took the Bruins until their 27th shot of the first period to beat Jarry, as a rebound try from Colby Cave trickled across the goal line, tying the score at 1-1 with 44.7 seconds left in the opening frame.
Jarry finished the first period with 28 saves, a season-high for Penguins goalies.
Noel Acciari put Providence in a 2-1 lead at 6:03 of the second period.
The Bruins went up 3-1 when Seth Griffith went bar down at 4:54 of the third.
Another shorthanded goal by Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, this time from Dominik Simon, cut the Bruins' lead to 3-2 with 1:18 left in the game.
Killing off a five minute major to end the game, the Penguins were unable to score a third shorty and the Bruins ended up with the win.
In addition to their two shorties, the Penguins held the Bruins' league- best power play to no goals on five attempts. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's penalty kill has gone a perfect 20-for-20 against Providence this season. However, the Penguins were unable to cash in on any of their five man advantages, as well.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's next game is Friday, Mar. 4 against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Puck drop at PPL Center is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
