Redbirds Snap I-Cubs' Streak at Four

MEMPHIS, TN - The Iowa Cubs (58-39) scored two runs in the ninth but it wasn't enough, as the Memphis Redbirds (50-49) took game three by a score of 6-4 at AutoZone Park.

Memphis didn't waste any time getting on the board, scoring three runs in the first frame with two home runs. Richie Palacios and Masyn Winn opened the game going back-to-back with solo home runs.

Three batters later, Matt Koperniak used an RBI single to push the Redbirds lead to 3-0. They kept their foot on the gas in the second, when Luken Baker knocked a two-run double, bringing their lead to 5-0.

A sixth run scored on a wild pitch in the third inning, ending Adrian Sampson's day. The righty allowed six earned runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out three in 2.2 innings. On the other side, Grant Black spun four scoreless innings for Memphis.

Iowa broke through in the sixth on a two-run home run from Alexander Canario, his first of the 2023 season. It stayed 6-2 until the ninth, when Iowa scored two more. David Bote drove an RBI double to make it 6-3 and came around to score on a single from Yonathan Perlaza, making it 6-4.

Edwin Ríos stepped up to the plate representing the tying run, but struck out, as Kyle Leahy closed the game out to secure Memphis' first win of the series.

POSTGAME NOTES:

David Bote went 3-for-4 with a run scored, a double and an RBI out of the seven-hole. The infielder is now hitting .282 with Iowa.

Iowa's bullpen combined to throw 5.1 scoreless frames tonight, despite walking eight batters. They allowed just two hits while striking out seven.
