Voit Homers Again, Mets and IronPigs Suspended in Fifth Inning Because of Rain, Doubleheader Slated for Friday

Syracuse Mets News Release
Allentown, PA - Thursday night's game between the Syracuse Mets and the Lehigh Valley IronPigs was suspended in the top of the fifth inning with no outs, the bases loaded, and the game tied, 2-2. The game was suspended because of rain and unplayable field conditions. The game will resume on Friday at 5:05 p.m. as part of a doubleheader. During Thursday's game, Luke Voit homered, marking his fifth consecutive game with a home run.
After a scoreless first inning, Lehigh Valley (50-45, 14-8) pushed across a two-out run and opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning. After the first two batters of the second recorded an out for the IronPigs, Drew Ellis doubled to keep the inning alive, and then Esteban Quiroz singled him home to start the evening's scoring for a 1-0 Lehigh Valley lead. Quiroz also drove in three of the 14 runs that Lehigh Valley scored in their win on Wednesday night.
The IronPigs tacked on another run in the bottom of the third to make it a 2-0 game. After Scott Kingery struck out to start the inning, Simon Muzziotti hit a ball off the base off the wall in right-center field to put a Lehigh Valley runner 90 feet away from scoring with one out. Weston Wilson, the next batter, got the job done. Wilson looped a fly ball deep enough into center field to score Muzziotti and make it a 2-0 game. Wilson hit homers in the first two games of this week's series on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively.
Syracuse (40-56, 7-15) roared right back and tied the game with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. The scoring flurry started with a bang when Voit crushed a hanging breaking ball over the wall in left-center field while leading off the inning for a solo homer that made it a 2-1 game. Voit has now smacked home runs in five games in a row, a rare feat in the history of Syracuse baseball. He is just the second Syracuse player since 1961 to homer in five consecutive games. Corey Brown accomplished the feat in 2012 from May 20th to May 25th.
The Mets weren't done there, however. Syracuse later tied the game in the top of the fourth after Voit's blast. Abraham Almonte singled immediately following the home run and moved to second on a Jonathan Araúz walk. After Luke Ritter struck out, Carlos Cortes tied the game on a sharp single into left field that plated Almonte, knotting the game up, 2-2. Cortes is working on an excellent week already at the plate. The former South Carolina Gamecock has driven in six runs in the first three games of the series.
After, Lehigh Valley stranded the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth inning, Syracuse put itself in a prime position to take a lead in the top of the fifth. Rafael Ortega and Ronny Mauricio both singled to start the frame, and Voit worked a walk to load the bases. With Abraham Almonte about to come to the plate, rain started to fall, and the tarp was put on the field.
After a 46-minute rain delay, the game was suspended and will be resumed on Friday at 5:05 p.m. as part of a doubleheader. Thursday's suspended game will be resumed on Friday in the top of the fifth inning with Syracuse having the bases loaded and no outs. The game will still be a nine-inning game. Friday's regularly scheduled game will start 30 minutes after the completion of the first game and will be seven innings.
