
Redbirds Hold off Zephyrs

MEMPHIS, TN - The Redbirds scored five runs in the first and two in the second to breeze by the Zephyrs in a 7-5 victory at AutoZone Park Wednesday night.
Memphis jumped out to an early 7-0 lead before New Orleans scratched out a run in the fourth with a solo shot by Matt Dominguez. The Z's closed the gap to two runs, plating one run in each of the last four innings, which included two more solo homers, by Cole Armstrong in the seventh and Kevin Mattison in the eighth. Mattison and former Redbird Donovan Solano each had two hits and an RBI in the Zephyrs loss. Amaury Cazana led the 'Birds with two hits and three RBI on the night.
Memphis starter Shelby Miller earned the win with five solid innings of work. The right-hander allowed one run on five hits while walking four and fanning nine batters for his first win of the year. New Orleans starter Tom Koehler was pegged with the loss giving up seven runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out seven across 4.1 innings. Eduardo Sanchez notched his third save for the Redbirds, allowing one run on one hit in the ninth.
The Redbirds and Zephyrs play tomorrow morning at 11:05 a.m. Nick Additon gets the early call for the home ream and will face New Orleans righty J.D. Martin. Tomorrow is the first of two Education Days at AutoZone Park this season. Over 25 schools and 4000 children will be in attendance for this special matinee game. University of Memphis's College of Education and the Redbirds teamed up to promote education through baseball.
