Tacoma Rainiers News Release
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Rainiers let an early lead slip away in a 5-1 series-opening loss to the Sacramento River Cats at Raley Field on Tuesday night.
The Rainiers jumped out to a quick 1-0 edge in the top of the first inning. Designated hitter Mike Carp scored from second base on Sacramento native Vinnie Catricala's single with two outs in the frame.
The lead would only hold until the second, when River Cats infielder Adam Rosales lined a single that cleared the way for Michael Taylor to score and tie the game at 1-1. Sacramento scored the go-ahead run in the third on a Brandon Moss sacrifice fly that plated outfielder Jermaine Mitchell.
Sacramento added insurance with three runs in the eighth off reliever Chance Ruffin on the way to dealing Tacoma a third consecutive loss.
The Rainiers collected seven hits on Wednesday, with Carlos Triunfel and Chih-Hsien Chiang each leading the way with 2-for-4 performances. Triunfel's multi-hit effort was his third over his last three games and extended the shortstop's hitting streak to a team-best eight games.
Starter Mauricio Robles (0-1) tossed a season-high 5.0 innings in a losing effort for the Rainiers. The left-hander held Sacramento to two runs on three hits, issued four walks and struck out four in the contest.
The Rainiers (5-8) return to action at 12:05 p.m. on Wednesday, April 18 to play the second game of the club's four-game set at Sacramento (10-3). Right-hander Forrest Snow (0-2, 10.13) is slated to take the bump for Tacoma against River Cats right-hander Brad Peacock (1-1, 1.50).
