Today's Game-- Coming off consecutive losses for the first time this season, the RedHawks open a four-game set in Nashville at 11:05 a.m. Dallas Keuchel will try and guide the RedHawks back into the win column two days after he was named PCL Pitcher of the Week. Nashville's Mark Rogers makes his season debut, as the Sounds begin the back half of an eight-game homestand (2-2).
Last Night-- Last night's game in Nashville was postponed due to rain. A double-header is scheduled for Thursday beginning at 6:05 p.m. Five Memphis pitchers combined on a five-hit shutout in a 2-0 win over the RedHawks at AutoZone Park Monday night. Redbirds starting pitcher Brian Broderick went six scoreless frames with six strikeouts to earn his first win of the year. Although RedHawks pitcher Aneury Rodriguez allowed just one run, he labored through five innings while allowing five hits and three walks with five strikeouts. Memphis scored in the first after a bases loaded walk, and Zack Cox smacked his first home run of the season in the sixth to make it 2-0. The RedHawks struggled to rally and did not have a baserunner in the final four innings.
Tonight's Probable Pitchers-- Fresh off being tabbed PCL Pitcher of the Week, Dallas Keuchel looks to stay unbeaten and unscored upon...Through his first two starts, Keuchel has tossed 13 scoreless innings, while allowing just six hits--all singles...Keuchel has yet to issue a walk and his 0.46 WHIP is best in the league...Opponents are hitting just .140 (4th in PCL) against him and 24 of his 39 outs have been groundouts...Going back to last season, Keuchel has thrown 15 consecutive scoreless innings...Nashville's Mark Rogers make his season debut after he finished serving a 25-game suspension for testing positive last season for a banned stimulant...In 2011, Rogers struggled while battling wrist injuries and was limited to just 44 innings while posting a 9.34 ERA across three levels...Rogers was the fifth overall pick of the 2004 Draft from Mount Ararat H.S. in Maine...He missed all of 2007 and 2008 due to shoulder injuries and made his Major League debut on September 10, 2010.
Goose-Egged-- On Monday the RedHawks were shutout for the first time since a 1-0 defeat in New Orleans on August 31, 2011. Last season, the RedHawks were shutout seven times, three of which came on the road.
Against the Norm-- Over the last three games, the RedHawks have been a surprising 2-for-20 with runners in scoring position, leaving 27 men on base. Through the first nine games of the season, the team posted a .360 clip with runners in scoring position. Their .308 average for the season still ranks fourth in the PCL, and their .320 mark with runners in scoring position and 2 outs ranks second.
Trends in Losses-- The RedHawks' four losses have come by a total of five runs. Oddly enough, last night was the first time they did not score first in a loss. They've been held to three runs or less in three of four losses as well.
Keuchel Named PCL Pitcher of the Week-- On Monday, RedHawks starting pitcher Dallas Keuchel was named Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week, April 5-15. In his first two starts of the season, Keuchel combined to go 2-0 while tossing 13 scoreless innings. He has given up just six hits--all singles--and has yet to walk an opposing hitter. The Tulsa native has also registered 24 groundouts among the 39 total outs he's recorded. (4.8:1 groundout-to-flyout ratio.)
Start Me Up-- Through the first 12 games of the season, the RedHawks starting pitchers have combined to go 6-2 with a 2.02 ERA, turning in six quality starts in the process. In 66.2 IP, they've allowed just 60 hits and have posted an impressive 63:15 (4.2:1) strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Living in the Zone-- The RedHawks pitching staff has allowed just 27 walks this season, best in the PCL. In six of their 12 games, they have issued two walks or less. This past week, the pitching staff went through a stretch of 23.1 innings without a free pass.
Notable Streaks-- Since he splits time behind the plate with Carlos Corporan, Landon Powell has quietly put together a seven-game hitting streak (.364) to start his season. On the other hand, Mike Hessman is currently on a seven-game hitless streak and is 0 for his last 25 with 11 strikeouts.
Bixler's Big Addition-- After getting optioned to the RedHawks from Houston, Brian Bixler has made quite the first impression. In his first four games with the RedHawks, Bixler is 8-for-16 and has reached base in 11 of his first 19 plate apperances. Bixler has also added another dimension to the team, already stealing four bases.
Fantastic Fernando-- RedHawks outfielder Fernando Martinez has hit safely in 11 of his first 12 games, including each start. He is tied for third in the PCL in RBIs (13) and leads the team in hits (15), home runs (3), and extra-base hits (7).
Against the Sounds-- The RedHawks took three of four in their first series with the Sounds last week in OKC...In their three wins, the RedHawks limited the Sounds to just three total runs...Nashville hit for a better team average (.250 to .232) and did not give up a home run...Last season the RedHawks were 9-7 against Nashville, including a 3-5 mark at Greer Stadium...The next series is May 29-June 1 at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
