Iowa Cubs News Release
Albuquerque, NM - Jeff Baisley's three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning lifted the Albuquerque Isotopes (6-8) to a 6-4 win over the Iowa Cubs (7-7) at Isotopes Park tonight. Will Savage turned in a stellar relief effort helping the Isotopes to their second straight win in this series. The season series is now tied 3-3.
The Isotopes scored first in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, Baisley singled and scored on a homer by Tim Federowicz, giving the 'Topes a 2-0 lead. It was the first home run allowed by Cubs' starter Jay Jackson in 11 innings to start the season.
The Cubs came back in the top of the third against Isotopes' starter Fernando Nieve. WIth two outs, Brett Jackson grounded a double down the first base line and Luis Valbuena launched his second homer of the season to tied the game. Anthony Rizzo was next and Nieve's first pitch hit Rizzo in the leg. Home plate umpire immediately ejected Nieve from the game. Jay Jackson had hit Alex Castellanos with a pitch in the first inning, but no warnings had been issued.
While the Isotopes protested, Savage came in from the bullpen to get loose. Welington Castillo greeted Savage with a double to the wall in deep left-center that scored Rizzo and gave the Cubs a 3-2 lead. That would be the only hit Savage would allow through 4.1 innings of scoreless relief.
Jay Jackson held the Isotopes in check until the sixth. With one out, Josh Fields walked and Scott Van Slyke singled to set up Baisley, who crushed a 2-1 pitch over the Cubs' bullpen in left-center for his third homer of the year. The blast put the 'Topes back on top at 5-3. After a strikeout of Federowicz, an infield hit, an error, and a walk loaded the bases, but Manny Corpas came in and got Castellanos to line out to end the inning.
The 'Topes added a run against Corpas in the eighth on an RBI triple by Matt Angle. The Cubs scored once in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by Edgar Gonzalez, but Scott Rice was able to get through the inning to earn his second save of the season. Savage (3-0) earned the win. Jay Jackson (1-1) suffered the loss.
The Cubs and Isotopes continue this series tomorrow night at 7:35 PM Central Time. LH Travis Wood (1-0, 4.91) will start for the Cubs against RH John Ely (0-1, 8.00) for the Isotopes. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 and streamed live at iowacubs.com. Deene Ehlis and Randy Wehofer have the call with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 7:15.
