Fresno Grizzlies News Release
Fresno, Calif. - Three errors, including a fielding error by Joaquin Arias in the 11th inning, dampened the Fresno Grizzlies' comeback attempt in the 7-6 extra-inning loss to the Reno Aces on Wednesdayafternoon at Chukchansi Park.
The Grizzlies came back once in the sixth inning to take the lead, but runs in the seventh and ninth innings sent the ballgame into extras. After a double play advanced Reno's Jake Elmore in the 11th, Ryan Wheeler hit a sharp grounder to Arias for potentially the third out. Arias bobbled the play, allowing Cole Gillespie to reach first and Elmore to score the deciding run.
Fresno reliever Shane Loux was tagged with loss after allowing the unearned run in two innings pitched. Reno's Jonathan Albaladejo picked up the win after tossing two scoreless innings of relief. Heath Hembree, who allowed the tying run in the ninth, suffered his first blown save of the season.
Fresno starter Andrew Kown found himself in some trouble early in the first inning. The first three batters all reached base, loading the bases for cleanup hitter Randy Ruiz. Kown settled in and struck out Ruiz before allowing a sacrifice fly to Ryan Wheeler and putting Reno ahead 1-0.Kown struck out Cole Gillespie to escape the inning with only one run allowed.
The Grizzlies quickly tied the game in the bottom half of the first inning when Kieschnick plated Christian with a sacrifice fly. Christian led off the lineup with a single and was advanced to third with an Arias single.
The Aces added a run in the second when Ryan Budde scored from first on a catching error by second baseman Skyler Stromsmoe. Stromsmoe missed Conor Gillaspie's throw during Reno pitcher Zach Kroenke's sacrifice bunt attempt.
Randy Ruiz increased Reno's lead to 4-1 after driving in two runs with a single in the top of the fifth. Ruiz led the Aces with two RBI in the game.
The Grizzlies came back from a three-run deficit in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring five runs on six hits. Roger Kieschnickdoubled following Arias' single to start the inning. Todd Linden followed suit with a double on a line drive to left, plating two runs.
Mike DeMark spelled Kroenke after Linden's extra-base hit. It appeared the inning was under control with DeMark on the bump after he retired Skyler Strosmoe on strikes and Brock Bond with a fly out.
But Eli Whiteside turned the inning back in the Grizzlies favor after delivering an RBI single near the left field line, knotting thegame at 4-4. Whiteside reached third base when the next batter, pinch-hitter Nick Noonan, dropped a soft single to short right. With runners on the corners, Justin Christian blistered a line drive to the gap in left center, plating both Whiteside and Noonan to give Fresno its first lead of the game, 6-4.
The Aces cut the Grizzlies' lead to 6-5 when David Winfree scored Evan Frey with a sacrifice fly to right. Fresno reliever Steve Edlefsen stranded the tying run on third with a strikeout of Wheeler, ending the top of the seventh.
Ruiz singled through the hole of second and first base to tie the game in the ninth.
Fresno and Reno will meet once again Thursday, April 19th. Fresno's Yusmeiro Petit (1-1, 8.36) will match up against Reno's Tom Layne (0-2, 7.88).
