Sox Blank Padres for Second Shutout Win of Season
April 18, 2012 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
The Colorado Springs Sky Sox extended their winning streak to five games with their second shutout victory of the season, blanking the Padres 2-0 for their first home shutout win since August 21, 2010. The Sky Sox had only one shutout victory all of last season.
Sky Sox starter Carlos Torres (1-0, 2.57 ERA) collected his first win of the season by limiting the Padres to just three hits while striking out six in his five innings of work. Sky Sox starters have allowed just two earned runs in their last 22.2 innings, and the Colorado Springs pitching staff has allowed just six total runs during the five-game winning streak. The Sky Sox are also a perfect 3-0 on the year in games Torres starts.
Four different Sky Sox batters notched two-hit games, with Colorado Springs getting all the offense they would need in the fifth inning scoring two runs off four hits. Sky Sox second baseman DJ LeMahieu and center-fielder Charlie Blackmon both had RBI singles in the inning, and the 1-3 batters of LeMahieu, Jordan Pacheco and Blackmon went 6-for-11 in the game.
The Sky Sox bullpen held the Padres to five baserunners in the last four innings, and no hits in the final two innings of the game, with Colorado Springs reliever Zach Putnam working around a leadoff walk to lock down his third save of the season. Putnam is now tied for second most in the Pacific Coast League, and the Sky Sox are undefeated when they lead after five innings.
The win improves the Sky Sox to 9-5 on the season, the best start since the 2009 season. Colorado Springs will look to equal their longest winning streak of the 2011 season of six games and earn their second consecutive series win as they send out right-hander Rob Scahill (1-1. 12.96 ERA) in the third game of the four-game set. Scahill will be matched up against Tucson righty Matt Palmer (0-1, 6.23 ERA) at 11:05 a.m. MT.
