Memphis Redbirds News Release

MEMPHIS, Tennessee - The Memphis Redbirds started off their two-week road trip in disappointing fashion, falling to the Gwinnett Stripers (Triple-A affiliate, Atlanta Braves) by a 3-2 final on a sunny Wednesday night in Georgia. The two teams are playing their fourth and final series against one another this week.

Entering the game, the headline was the starting pitching matchup between Matthew Liberatore and Kyle Muller, two of the top left-handed pitching prospects in Minor League Baseball. The matchup did not disappoint, as both had solid outings.

Muller went six innings, allowing just two earned runs on six hits with six strikeouts for Gwinnett (58-45). Liberatore was also strong, allowing three earned runs in 6.2 innings with six strikeouts. In his last four starts, Liberatore's ERA is just 2.98 in 27.2 innings with 26 strikeouts.

The early runs for the Redbirds came from familiar faces. Juan Yepez doubled leading off the second inning and later came around to score on an RBI single from Dennis Ortega. Yepez continued his hitting binge on Wednesday night. In his last 11 games, the infielder is batting .476 with 13 extra-base hits and nine runs scored.

In the third inning, Nick Plummer smacked his first Triple-A home run, a line-drive shot that cleared the left-center field wall. He reached three more times on Wednesday night. The former first-round pick has reached base in 18 of his first 30 plate appearances in Triple-A.

Tanner Roark shut the game down for Gwinnett, earning a six-out save by tossing scoreless frames in the eighth and ninth. The Redbirds certainly had their chances to tie the game late. They left a combined five runners on base in the final four innings.

The Memphis Redbirds are the proud Triple-A Affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. Memphis has claimed four League Championships and one Triple-A National Championship since their affiliation with St. Louis began in 1998.
