Memphis Redbirds News Release
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Four hits from Randal Grichuk and five runs driven in by Xavier Scruggs led the Memphis Redbirds to a 13-4 victory over the Salt Lake Bees at Smith's Ballpark on Friday night.
With the win, Memphis (37-38) took three of four from the Bees in the series and travel to Las Vegas to continue its eight-game road swing through the Pacific Conference. The Redbirds scored 36 runs over the four games.
The top four hitters in the Memphis lineup went a combined 10-for-17 with four doubles, eight RBIs, nine runs scored, and four walks. Grichuk (4-for-5) recorded the club's third, four-hit game of the season, joining Kolten Wong (May 13 vs. Round Rock) and Oscar Taveras (May 20 at Colorado Springs).
Scruggs (2-for-5) doubled and drove in five runs, tying a career high for the fifth time. Leadoff man Shane Robinson (3-for-5) added three hits and season-best four runs scored.
Starter Angel Castro (7-4) recorded his third straight quality start, yielding one run on five over six innings of work for the win. The right-hander also walked two and fanned three.
Memphis jumped out to a 5-0 lead against Salt Lake starter Wade LeBlanc after the first two innings and didn't look back, beginning with a pair of two-run singles by Scruggs and Robinson. Grichuk conclude the three-run, second-inning rally by knocking an RBI base hit to left.
Scott Moore roped a two-out RBI single in the fifth before Stephen Piscotty lined his team-leading 23rd double to score Robinson in the seventh, extending the lead to 7-1.
Salt Lake came within three runs at 7-4 in the eighth inning, highlighted by a Brandon Boesch two-run homer.
The Redbirds tacked on six more runs in the ninth, beginning with Scruggs' three-run double that blew the game wide open. Pete Kozma added another insurance run with a line drive single before Audry Perez recorded a two-run base hit.
Memphis continues with the second leg of an eight-game swing out west with a four-game series with the Las Vegas 51s (Triple-A Mets) at Cashman Field. Left-hander Tim Cooney (7-4, 3.26) will face right-hander Noah Synergaard (5-4, 4.78).
