June 20, 2014 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Tacoma Rainiers News Release
TACOMA, Wash. -- The Tacoma Rainiers season-high winning streak ended at seven games following an 8-7 loss in extra innings to the Colorado Springs Sky Sox on Thursday.
With the game tied at seven in the top of the 14th inning, outfielder Evan Frey scored the game-deciding run from third base on a throwing error committed by third baseman Gabriel Noriega with two outs.
Extra innings were necessitated after Tacoma posted a two-run rally in the bottom of the eighth. Outfielder Abraham Almonte cut a 7-5 deficit down to a run with a one-out RBI single. He eventually went on to score the tying run on a sacrifice fly hit by infielder Nick Franklin two batters later.
The Rainiers lineup combined to collect 11 hits over the course of the team's longest game this season. Catcher Jesus Sucre accounted for three of those hits, including a two-run home run that briefly provided a 4-3 lead for Tacoma in the bottom of the second. Xavier Nady belted a solo home run in the fifth and ended the night 2-for-6 with a pair of RBI.
Forrest Snow (0-1) was dealt the loss after surrendering one unearned run on two hits in the 14th inning. Prior to Snow's outing, fellow relievers Chance Ruffin (1.0), Brandon Maurer (2.0), Stephen Pryor (1.0), Carson Smith (2.0) and Stephen Kohlscheen (2.0) combined to hold Colorado Springs to three hits in 8.0 shutout innings of relief work.
Starter Taijuan Walker surrendered seven runs - three earned - on six hits in 5.0 innings. The right-hander struck out four and walked one in his fifth start with the Rainiers this season.
The Rainiers (33-40) look to capture a series win in the final game of the team-s four-game set with Colorado Springs (30-43) tomorrow, June 20. Right-hander Matt Palmer (1-3, 3.46) is slated start for Tacoma against Sky Sox left-hander Pedro Hernandez (5-3, 5.92). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
