Fresno Grizzlies News Release
METAIRIE, La - A four-run eighth inning by the Fresno Grizzlies (38-38) broke a tie and led them to a 7-3 victory Friday night over the New Orleans Zephyrs (40-35). The win gives them a season series split against the Zephyrs.
Tied 2-2 in the eighth, the Grizzlies went after two Zephyrs relievers by scoring four two-out runs on six hits as they sent nine batters to the plate. Joe Panik scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch from Jesus Sanchez, while Nick Noonan, Chris Dominguez and Travis Ishikawa all recorded run-scoring hits.
Reliever George Kontos (W, 1-2) earned the win by tossing a scoreless seventh and eighth.
Gary Brown led off the game with a single and scored when shortstop Josh Rodriguez couldn't handle a grounder off the bat of Adam Duvall. Armed with the 1-0 lead, the Grizzlies added a second run in the fourth when Travis Ishikawa received the green light on a 3-0 pitch from starter Alex Sanabia (ND; 1 ER/6.0 IP, 11 SO) and served it over the left-center field fence for his fifth homer of the year.
Fresno starter Mike Kickham (ND; 2 ER/6.0 IP) whipped through the New Orleans batting order with ease early on. He retired the first 11 batters of the game until surrendering a single to Mark Canha in the fourth. The lefty struck out Derek Dietrich to end the frame and then retired the side in order in the fifth.
But Kickham hit the first batter of the sixth, walked the next and then saw both runners advance to second and third on a sacrifice bunt. Donovan Solano collected a RBI groundout for a second consecutive night to get the Zephyrs on the board, while Canha grounded a two-out game-tying single to center.
Fresno outscored the Zephyrs 5-1 over the final two innings to secure the win and put them back at the .500 mark.
