Rebels Fall Well Short in Medicine Hat

Red Deer Rebels News Release

MEDICINE HAT - There wasn't a whole lot about the Red Deer Rebels' game Saturday that impressed GM/head coach Brent Sutter.

"We never generated a lot and then our goaltender wasn't very good," said Sutter, who wasn't enthralled with the performance of starting stopper Riley Lamb.

"Three of the first four goals he gave up . . . you can't give up at this level."

That being said, the Rebels managed only 17 shots at Tigers starter Michael Bullion in a 6-1 Western Hockey League setback.

"We just didn't generate enough, we spent a lot of time chasing the game," said Sutter. "Our best players weren't our best players. Their best players outplayed ours."

Gary Haden opened the scoring for the hosts when he converted a shot off the end boards by defenceman Quenneville 2:04 into the contest, and Hayden Ostir made it 2-0 at 2:03 of the middle frame on a shot from the right circle.

Ryan Jevne busted down the right wall and beat Lamb high to the far side at 11:23 of the second and Haden potted his second of the night two minutes later.

Hunter Donohoe notched the Rebels' lone marker at 16:14 of the second period, his wrist shot from the point finding the back of the net.

After Kristian Riechel was stopped on a breakaway early in the final frame, the Tigers got late goals from James Hamblin and Jevne to seal the deal.

The Rebels' effort wasn't much better - if at all - then was the case in Friday's 5-4 shootout win over the visiting Kootenay Ice.

"It was one of those games where nothing goes like you want it to be," said Sutter. "We dropped our guard against a good hockey team and our goaltending wasn't even close to where it was last night.

"We stopped playing a team game and our turnovers were terrible last night and tonight they were just as bad.

"Your best players have to lead by example. When they're as big a culprits as anyone else, that's not a good sign."

Lamb stopped 26 of 30 shots before being replaced by Ethan Anders, who turned aside 22 of the 24 shots he faced.

The Rebels take on the Hitmen this afternoon (4 p.m.) in Calgary. Red Deer will be in Lethbridge Friday to face the Hurricanes and will return to the Centrium the following evening to entertain the Tigers.
