Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Swift Current, SK. - Fresh off beating the league leading Moose Jaw Warriors on Friday night, the Brandon Wheat Kings dropped a 3-1 decision to the second place Broncos in Swift Current on Saturday.
Aleski Heponiemi's second period goal snapped a 1-1 tie and proved to be the game winner as the Broncos clinched the season series between the two teams, who will play again this coming Friday night at Westoba Place.
Through the first seven games of the season series, Swift Current has won four and lost twice in regulation.
Matteo Gennaro and Beck Malentyn rounded out the scoring for the Broncos, who improved to 46-14-4-2 on the season and remain one point back of the front running Warriors in the Western Hockey League's Eastern Division.
Linden McCorrister scored in a losing cause for the Wheat Kings, whose record slipped to 34-26-3-2 on the season and coupled with Regina's win over the Hitmen in Calgary, Brandon finds itself sitting in fourth place - four points up on Prince Albert and eight ahead of the Saskatoon Blades.
Between Regina, Brandon, the Raiders and Blades - only three will qualify for post season play.
The Wheat Kings, who have seven games remaining in the regular season, have now posted a "winning" record for the fifth consecutive season and 12th in the past thirteen seasons.
Brandon now returns home to host Lethbridge on Tuesday night, which will be the year's final "2 for Tuesday" of the 2017-18 campaign.
That means western Manitoba hockey fans will have one last chance to take advantage of this special 2 for 1 ticket offer.
As well, the Keystone Centre will be offering a number of concession specials on popcorn, hot dogs, soft drinks and beer.
The Keystone box office will reopen at 10am Saturday but fans can also order online at keystonecentre.ca or by calling (204) 726-3555.
