Vancouver Giants News Release
Vancouver, B.C. - Sunday afternoon at the Langley Events Centre, the Vancouver Giants dropped a 6-1 decision to the Western Conference leading Everett Silvertips. Kevin Davis led the Silvertips attack with two goals while Connor Dewar and Garrett Pilon both chimed in with a goal and an assist. Jared Dmytriw had the lone tally in response for the Giants which came in the first period on a terrific breakaway finish. The Silvertips outshot the Giants 37-29 while going two-for-three on the power play. The Giants responded zero-for-three on their power play chances.
Fresh off playoff clinching victory last night at home, the Giants jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Jared Dmytriw won a foot race to a puck along the left-wing. The 19-year-old speedster then raced wide down the wing, cut to the front of the net and roofed a shot over the glove of Everett starter Dustin Wolf for his 15th goal of the season.
Late in the first Everett answered when Connor Dewar whacked home his own rebound on a backhand past Giants starter Trent Miner for his team-leading 36th of the season. Shots were 14-10 for Everett after one, but the score was dead-locked at 1-1.
Period two belonged to the Silvertips who out-scored the Giants 4-0 and outshot them 16-6. Bryce Kindopp notched his 20th of the season at 8:43 unassisted to get the offense started, then Kevin Davis bagged his first of two goals on the night at 12:25 to open-up Everett's lead to 3-1.
Washington Capitals prospect Garrett Pilon was awarded a penalty shot at 15:36 and made no mistake, snapping a forehand shot past the glove of Miner for his 32nd. Then with one tenth of a second remaining in the frame Kevin Davis backhanded a loose puck past Miner's right pad for his 10th and a 5-1 Everett lead. Shots were 30-16 Everett through two periods.
7:35 into the third the Silvertips made it 6-1 when Riley Sutter redirected a Wyatte Wylie point-shot home for his 25th. The Giants had some good looks late, but Dustin Wolf held his ground in the Everett goal securing the 6-1 victory for his team on the road. Final shots were 37-29. For Everett it was their third win in a row and their eighth in their past 10 games. The Giants are 4-5-1-0 in their last 10.
Up next for Vancouver, a stretch of five straight games on the road beginning on Wednesday night at Prospera Place in Kelowna against the Rockets.
NOTES:
- With an assist on Jared Dmytriw's first period goal, Davis Koch snagged his third helper of the weekend for Vancouver. He now has 10 points (3G, 7A) in 21 games since he was acquired in a Trade Deadline deal with Edmonton.
- In three career WHL starts, Trent Miner has faced two penalty shots. During his last start on February 17th, he stopped Victoria's Matthew Phillips.
- Sunday's loss at home was just the 12th in regulation at home for the Giants whose home record now sits at 20-12-2-1.
- Before the game the Giants honored three of their long-time staff members who have been associated with the team since Day 1. Bus Driver Derek Holloway, Scouting Director Terry Bonner and long-time broadcaster Bill Wilms were all recognized by Giants owners Ron Toigo and Sultan Thiara.
