Silvertips Earn OT Victory in Front of Sellout

March 4, 2018 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Everett Silvertips News Release

EVERETT, Wash. - Connor Dewar deflected a Patrick Bajkov one timer past Liam Hughes to lift the Everett Silvertips to a 2-1 victory in overtime over the Seattle Thunderbirds before a sellout crowd of 8,319 at Angel of the Winds Arena in downtown Everett on Saturday in WHL action.

Dewar's team leading 35th goal of the season was his 7th goal in 9 games against Seattle this season, also his second straight game winning goal in as many nights. Patrick Bajkov and Matt Fonteyne each collected a goal and an assist. Carter Hart earned the victory in net with 17 saves while counterpart Liam Hughes turned in a 44-save effort.

The sellout crowd in downtown Everett capped a two-day stretch where the Silvertips attracted over 14,000 fans for a pair of games.

UP NEXT: The Silvertips visit the Vancouver Giants on Sunday, 2:00 p.m. (1380 AM / FM 95.3 / WHL Live / Tips App) at Langley Events Centre for the final meeting of the season.

The first period began with a tight defensive battle and the players used their bodies to not allow much room for solid scoring chances. Patrick Bajkov got his 30th (career high) of the season at 7:08 as he finished Matt Fonteyne's beautiful maneuver to the inside and slipped the puck past Liam Hughes to make it 1-0 Tips.

The tight game continued into the second as defense continued to reign supreme for the two teams. Both Hart and Hughes shined throughout the second period as they made timely saves and came up big for their teams. The game started getting a bit chippy midway through the second as scrums became more frequent and the teams became a bit less disciplined. Seattle tied the game at 13:54 as Noah Philp snuck the puck past Carter Hart on a snap shot at the left circle to make it 1-1.

The third period truly got away from Seattle as they were outshot 20-1 as Everett simply dominated in puck possession. Liam Hughes kept Seattle in the game and made several spectacular saves to keep his team in it, forcing the game to go into overtime. The Tips best chance came within the two minute mark remaining, when Fonteyne narrowly missed on a half-open net attempt.

The game went into sudden death overtime with some intense 3-on-3 hockey. Matthew Wedman took a very untimely penalty for Seattle, giving Everett a power play in overtime and the game switched to 4-on-3 action. While on the power play, Connor Dewar deflected a laser one timer from Patrick Bajkov, at the center point, past Hughes to score the game winner at 2:48.

The Tips outshot Seattle, 7-0 in overtime.
