Reading Royals News Release

Reading, PA - The Reading Royals of the ECHL and the Reading Parking Authority today announced that all RPA operated lots in the Sovereign Center vicinity will charge a reduced event parking rate of $5.00 per vehicle on Sunday, February 19, to accommodate fans attending the First Annual Battle of the Badges charity hockey game between the Reading Police Department and Fire Department. The RPA will then donate one-half of the funds collected at the parking facilities on this date to the Michael H. Wise II Memorial Foundation, where it will be applied to fund a scholarship program for family members of the Reading Police and Fire Departments. In order to accommodate early arriving fans, all RPA lots will open at 11:00 am on that morning with the exception of the Penn Court facility (8th and Penn Street), which actually will open earlier-at 10:00 am.

The Battle of the Badges charity hockey game will pit teams comprised of members of the Reading Fire Department and the Reading Police Department against one another, with each roster being filled out with a couple of local celebrities-including Royals' Coach Karl Taylor-and perhaps some "ringers" from area law enforcement departments and fire companies. The game will begin at 1:00 pm and will be played immediately prior to the Royals match-up against the Trenton Titans, which is scheduled to start at 3:35 pm. All fans who purchase a ticket to the Royals game against the Titans will also gain admittance to the Battle of the Badges.

Amy Love, the Event Coordinator of the RPA, stated, "the RPA is extremely pleased to be able to be a part of the Battle of the Badges. We want to make it as easy as possible for fans to come and enjoy what should be a fun and hotly contested game-and you'll have to pardon us if we don't choose sides in this one! The fact that the RPA is going to also be able to make what we hope is a relatively sizeable donation to the Michael H. Wise II Memorial Foundation makes this a win-win for all involved."

Gordon Kay, the general manager of the Royals, stated, "we want to thank the RPA for their generous offer to reduce the event parking rate on the day of the Battle of the Badges, as well as their offer to make a donation to the Michael H. Wise II Foundation. The Battle of the Badges is a great example of what can happen when the entire City of Reading joins together to bring off an event that will have a clear positive impact on our entire community."
