San Diego Gulls News Release

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah - Unfortunately for the San Diego Gulls, they are starting to get used to this. The Gulls fell behind early, tried to come back and then fell just short again, this time by a 4-3 score to the Utah Grizzlies on Friday night at the E-Center. The loss extended the Gulls' losing streak to a season-high four games, with each setback coming by a single goal on the road. In the process, San Diego (19-20-5) dropped below .500 and failed to capitalize on an opportunity to take over sole possession of third place in the Pacific Division. Instead, the Gulls remain tied for third with Bakersfield, which also lost Friday.

Utah (25-19-4), meanwhile, won its third consecutive match while improving to 2-2-1 against San Diego this season, including two straight victories this week. The Grizzlies sit in fourth place in the West Division.

In this one, the Gulls once again found themselves down early against Utah. On Wednesday, San Diego fell behind 3-0 in the opening frame before falling 3-2. On Friday, the Grizzlies notched a pair of first-period tallies to take another multi-goal lead into the first intermission, 2-0.

The Gulls clawed back on three separate occasions, pulling to within 2-1, 3-2 and 4-3. Each time, however, Utah responded with timely scores to hold off short-handed San Diego.

All-Star Jesse Bennefield scored a pair of tallies for the Gulls, including one with 9:30 left in the third period to make it 4-3. But it wasn't enough for San Diego, which played with only 14 skaters for the second game in a row.

The Gulls have now scored only 12 goals over their last seven games, and their record over that span shows it: 1-5-1.

San Diego got its other goal from Mark Wires at the 2:55 mark of the third period. Steve Hildenbrand added a pair of assists for the Gulls, who play two more games on the road before returning home next Saturday.
