Checkers down Lynx 5-2

The Charlotte Checkers rode a four-goal first period to a 5-2 victory over the Augusta Lynx on Friday night in front of a spirited crowd of 2,768 at the Augusta-Richmond County Civic Center.

Brian Passmore opened the scoring with a power play goal to put the Lynx (19-24-3) ahead 1-0 7:23 into the contest. Anthony Battaglia collected the only assist on the goal.

From there, the Checkers (24-20-4) took over with five straight goals, four of which in the opening frame. Juris Stals scored twice while Rich Kozak, Dusty Jamieson, and Rory Rawlyk also marked for Charlotte. Mike Wall took the loss and was pulled after the fifth goal on 13 shots, replaced by Jason Wolfe at the 3:28 mark of the second period. Wolfe stopped all 11 shots faced for the remainder of the contest.

Augusta finished the game 2-for-8 on the power play while Charlotte went 0-for-6. Chris Holt earned the win with 29 saves in the contest.

The Lynx are back in action tomorrow night against the Trenton Titans at 7:35 pm, with the Classic Stucco and Stone Pre-Game Show kicking off one half-hour before game time on NEWSTALKSPORTS 1630.
