Phoenix RoadRunners News Release
Phoenix, Ariz. - Phoenix RoadRunners forward Mike Ouellet has teamed up with the Arizona Department of Health Services to lead a new campaign against the usage of spit tobacco among Arizona teenagers. As the campaign's primary spokesperson, Ouellet, a user of spit tobacco for 10 years, has decided that he is "through with chew".
"As a professional athlete, I came to the realization that to perform at the highest level, I needed to live a healthier lifestyle," said Ouellet. "I didn't want to wake up five years from now to see what chewing tobacco could potentially do to my career, and that made my decision even easier. I'm happy to work with ADHS to tell my story and hopefully steer kids away from using spit tobacco in the future."
Ouellet will present his story to area high schools and youth hockey organizations, and his message will be featured at all Phoenix RoadRunners home games, during RoadRunners' game broadcasts on News-Talk Radio 1100AM KFNX and Pro Sports Radio, and at www.phxroadrunners.com through the conclusion of the season.
The Arizona Department of Health Services will kick off their campaign with "Through With Chew Week," running from February 12-19. The first ever "Through With Chew Night at the RoadRunners" is at 7:11PM on Friday, February 17 when the RoadRunners host the Victoria Salmon Kings at US Airways Center. To promote Mike's message, the first 2,000 fans will receive a Mike Ouellet "Through With Chew" growth chart poster.
ADHS is also encouraging quitters of spit tobacco to share their personal stories. Log on to www.phxroadrunners.com to tell your story before Monday, and you will be entered to win tickets to the RoadRunners' February 17 game against Victoria, a chance to meet your favorite RoadRunners' players and coaches at a special post-game party, and a free "I'm Through With Chew" T-Shirt courtesy of the Arizona Department of Health Services. Quitters can also share their stories at the ADHS Information table during "Through with Chew Night at the RoadRunners" for the chance to win tickets to future RoadRunners' home games.
Ouellet, 23, is in his third season of professional hockey and currently ranks eighth on the RoadRunners in scoring with seven goals and 14 points. The Cap-de-la-Madelaine, Quebec native has collected 26 goals and 68 points in 118 career games.
The Phoenix RoadRunners have won a club-record five consecutive games and will continue their comeback towards the ECHL Kelly Cup Playoffs beginning at 9:15PM MST Friday when they head to Anchorage for a three-game weekend series against the West Division leader Alaska Aces. Catch all the action live on News Talk Radio 1100AM KFNX and Pro Sports Radio beginning with "RoadRunners Countdown" at 8:55PM.
