
Rattlers finish road trip with 20-7 loss

PEORIA, IL -- The Peoria Chiefs clubbed the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers into submission with a 20-7 win Thursday night at O'Brien Field. Steve Sherman hit a grand slam and drove in six runs for the Chiefs and Jarrett Hoffpauir finished a double shy of the cycle. Wisconsin ended their twelve-game, thirteen-day road trip with a 2-10 record.
Wisconsin (57-78 overall, 26-40 second half) got on the board in the first inning for just the second time of the road trip . Josh Womack singled and stole second. Adam Jones doubled down the left field line to put the Rattlers up 1-0.
But, Peoria (72-63, 34-32) answered with a pair of runs on three hits, a walk, and a hit batsman in the bottom of the first. Matt Dryer and Sherman each singled in a run for a 2-1 Chief lead.
The Rattlers scored three times with two out in the top of the second inning to retake the lead. Nick Orlandos drew a bases loaded walk to tie the game. Jones drove in two more with an infield single.
The Chiefs rattled off six runs in the bottom of the second. Hoffpauir hit a two run homer as the second batter of the inning to tie the game. Daric Barton singled in the third run for a 5-4 Peoria lead. Dryer had an RBI double, Sherman had another RBI single, and Chris Patrick laced an RBI double to plate the final run of the inning.
Peoria added two more runs in the third. Hoffpauir tripled to start the inning. Monegan singled to drive him home. Later in the inning, John-Paul Davis singled home Peoria's tenth run of the night.
The Chiefs dropped the hammer with a ten run sixth inning. The big blow was Sherman's second grand slam in two days.
Wisconsin scored two runs on a Michael Cox double in the eighth and one more on an RBI single by Nick Orlandos in the ninth.
Derek Roper got the win with four innings of one-hit, shutout relief pitching.
The Rattlers return to Fox Cities Stadium to conclude their season with a four game series against the Fort Wayne Wizards. Brian Stitt (2-9, 4.31ERA) is the scheduled starter for Wisconsin. Fort Wayne will send Travis Chick (4-0, 2.23ERA) to the hill. Game time is 7:05pm.
