Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, OH â The Dayton Dragons (19-47, 45-90) were able to snap a five game losing streak and rebound from back-to-back losses at the hands of the Battle Creek Yankees (36-30, 69-66). A five run third inning was enough to keep the broomsticks in the closet for the Yankees and close out the Dragons 2004 home season with a victory, 9-3, in front of 8,456 at Fifth Third Field on Thursday night.
Just like the previous three games in this series, the Yankees were able to plate the game's first runs. A three run third inning off Dragons starter Damian Ursin (ND) had the Dragons in an early hole. A pair of walks to Willie Vasquez and Matt Carson, plus hits from Tommy Rojas, Nick Walsh and Hector Made capped off the big inning, where the Yankees sent nine batters to the plate and led 3-0.
Unlike night's past however, the Dragons were able to answer the call. In the bottom of the third, Dayton put three of the first four batters on against Battle Creek starter Tyler Clippard (L, 10-10). Clippard had been stingy his first two innings but walked the lead off man Jorge Mejia, before Will Hudson singled, and with one out Javon Moran delivered an RBI single to center field. First baseman Chris Kroski followed and drove a 2-RBI double to right, scoring Hudson and Moran. After a Urgelles walk, Habelito Hernandez plated another with a run-scoring single up the middle. A five run, five hit inning put the Dragons in front for the first time in four games with a 5-3 lead.
With runs to work with the Dragons pitching staff buckled down and pitched brilliantly the rest of the way. Ursin finished with 2.0 innings, and just the three runs allowed while Justin Knoff (W, 1-1) followed with 4.1 innings of four hit baseball, before Trey Rice (ND) came on to shut the door with 2.2 innings of no-hit baseball.
Offensively, the Dragons had plenty through three innings but plated two more in the fourth and two more in the eight to cap off the scoring at 9-3. An error free ball game for the Dragons, they end a five game losing skid and also snuff out a three game winning streak for the Yankees on get-away day.
The Dragons will take on the Yankees again Friday, but with the venue switching to Battle Creek, Michigan for the first of four games. ESPN Radio 1410 Wing AM will carry the game live beginning with the pre game show at 6:30 pm; with the first pitch slated for 7:05 PM. LHP Jan Granado will get the start for Dayton, while the Yankees will counter with LHP Abel Gomez.
