Yankees lose lead, finale in Dayton
September 2, 2004 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release
The Battle Creek Yankees could not complete the sweep in Dayton, losing 9-3 to the Dragons in Midwest League action at Fifth Third Field. The Yanks took an early 3-0 lead in the second, but a long third inning for Yankee starter Tyler Clippard saw Dayton come back, take the lead, and hold on for the win. Erold Andrus was at the on-deck circle when the game ended. He now has 535 at bats this season, one shy of the single-season franchise record set in 1999 by former Battle Cat Aaron McNeal.
John Urick led off the second inning with a single and later took second on a wild pitch. After Matt Carson walked, Bryce Kartler sacrificed the runners to second and third with one out. Willie Vasquez loaded the bases with a two-out walk, and Tommy Rojas delivered a two-run single, and it was 2-0. Nick Walsh made it 3-0 with an ensuing single, and that was it for the Yanks offensively.
Battle Creek lost the lead in the third. The Dragons sent 10 batters to the plate, getting run-scoring hits from Javon Moran, Chris Kroski, Habelito Hernandez, and Tiago Campos, while taking a 5-3 advantage. That ended Clippard's outing. He worked three innings, allowed five runs on five hits, walked two, struck out none, and hit one batter.
Matt Brumit came in to pitch the fourth, allowing two runs (one earned) as Dayton increased the lead to 7-3. Mike Gardner and Heath Castle each tossed two innings of relief. Gardner struck out three in his two perfect frames, but Castle gave up two runs in the eighth, and it was 9-3 after that.
Clippard (10-10) took the loss for Battle Creek while Justin Knoff (1-1) got the win for Dayton after he replaced starter Dirt Ursin. The Yankees finish the regular season with a 22-12 road record. They continue their season-ending battle with Dayton Friday at C.O. Brown Stadium. Game time is 7 EDT.
