South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN â In the early 1970's Dionne Warwick had a hit on the music charts titled Walk On By. Thursday night at The Cove, the South Bend Silver Hawks did exactly that when Kane County Cougars reliever Brigmer Leon walked Jeff Cook with the bases loaded in the sixth inning, helping the Hawks to a 3-2 win to close the regular season home schedule.
For the third time in four games, the Cougars grabbed the lead in the first inning. Luke Appert delivered a one out single to center, moved to second on David Castillo's groundout and scored when Vasili Spanos' swinging bunt landed to the right of the mound where Hawks starting pitcher Garret Mock picked up the ball, slipped and threw wildly to first, allowing Appert to score.
The Hawks tied the game in the bottom of the third when Alex Frazier, who has been the offensive star for the Hawks this season, stroked his team leading 20th homerun of the year. They grabbed the lead in the next frame when Emilio Bonifacio reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and third base and scored on a throwing error by Kane County catcher Trevor Brown.
Kane County tied the game in the top of the fifth. Luke Appert tripled to left and scored when David Castillo followed with an RBI single.
The Hawks took the lead in the sixth when Edgar Varela singled with two outs and advanced home when reliever Brigmer Leon walked the next three batters he faced, forcing Varela in from third base.
The Cougars had a chance to tie the game in the top of the eighth inning. Ryan Coffin, who came on in relief of starter Garrett Mock, walked the first two batters of the inning, but was able to get Trevor Brown to foul out on his bunt attempt. Left-hander Doug Slaten was then summoned from the bullpen to face left handed hitter Eddie Kim, who was induced into an inning ending double play.
The Silver Hawks take off for their final road trip before the 2004 Midwest League Playoffs. The Hawks will head out to Burlington, IA to take on the Burlington Bees and will start the Midwest League Playoffs next Wednesday night. Their opponent is still to be determined. The first playoff game at The Cove will take place September 9th. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
