Burlington Bees News Release
Beloit, WI - The Beloit Snappers (33-32, 71-64) scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings and beat the Burlington Bees (32-33, 54-81) 5-4 in ten innings tonight at Pohlman Field. The loss snapped a streak of four straight wins for the Bees and five in a row against the Snappers.
Neither team scored through the first five innings, as starters Carlos Villanueva for Beloit and Greg Atencio for the Bees, put up a bunch of zeroes. The Bees broke through against Villanueva in the top of the sixth. Chris Lubanski led off with a bunt single and went to second as Vinny Rottino threw the ball down the right field line for an error. After a flyout, Alan Moye and Ed Lucas singled, driving in Lubanski to make it 1-0. After an intentional walk to Kevin Reinking loaded the bases, Villanueva struck out Luis Gonzalez but walked Jeff Barry to force in a second run for the Bees. That walk knocked Villanueva out of the game and Ty Taubenheim came in to close out the inning. Mike Gaffney led off the top of the seventh with a solo homer off of Taubenheim to extend the Bees lead to 3-0. It was Gaffney's second homer of the year, both have come against Beloit.
Atencio completed six shutout innings and allowed four walks and three hits. Dusty Dossett took over for the seventh. With one out Terry Trofholz and Robby Deevers singled and then pulled off a double steal to move to second and third. Trofholz scored on a bounce out by Guilder Rodriguez and the Snappers were on the board at 3-1.
The scored stayed 3-1 into the ninth inning. Ben Stanczyk took over on the mound making his Snappers debut. With one out, Angel Sanchez singled, moved to second and third on a pair of wild pitches, and scored on a two-out single by Lubanski to extend the Bees lead to 4-1.
In the bottom of the ninth, Dossett walked Grant Richardson and Adam Heether doubled down the right field line to put runners on second and third. Trofholz followed with a single to left to drive in a run to cut the Bees lead to 4-2 and put runners on the corners. Dossett gave way to Gabe DeHoyos who was greeted by a sacrifice bunt from Deevers to moved Trofholz to second. Rodriguez lifted a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Heether and advance Trofholz to third to make it 4-3. DeHoyos then broke the bat of Hernan Iribarren who still managed to bloop a single into shallow center to drive in the tying run. In the bottom of the tenth inning, Rottino led off with a double to right. After a bounce out to short, Rottino moved to third on a wild pitch. With the infield in, Richardson popped out in foul territory to Kila Kaaihue at first, but Heether lined the next pitch into center to drive in Rottino with the game-winning run. DeHoyos (1-2) suffered the loss with Stanczyk (1-0) picking up the win.
Clinton beat the Quad Cities tonight and Peoria beat Wisconsin, so with five games to play, the Bees are one game behind a three-way tie between Beloit, Quad Cities, and Peoria for a spot in the playoffs. The Bees and Snappers conclude this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at Pohlman Field. RH Justin Sherman (2-1, 4.15) will start for the Bees against RH Greg Moreira (8-6, 3.83) for the Snappers. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
