Albany River Rats News Release

WILKES-BARRE, PA-Chris Conner scored three goals and added three assists to lead the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to a 9-2 victory over the Albany River Rats Wednesday night at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

The Penguins scored six straight goals to open the game en route to their fourth straight victory. Luca Caputi scored two goals with two assists, Wyatt Smith chipped in a goal with three assists, and Mark Letestu and Dustin Jeffrey each netted a goal with two assists as the fourth-place Baby Pens closed to within eight points of the second place River Rats in the East Division standings.

Conner had three points in the first period alone, as the Penguins jumped out to a 3-0 lead. The fourth-year forward drew first blood at 13:32 with a breakaway tally, and then assisted on Ben Lovejoy's seventh of the year at 17:40 for a 2-0 lead. Coner set-up Wyatt Smith's power play marker just two seconds before the horn sounded to give his club a three-goal cushion.

The Penguins notched two goals in the first 1:37 of the second period to take a commanding 5-0 lead. Luca Caputi scored his 20th of the season on a wrap-around at 1:04 of the middle frame to chase Peters from the goal. Veteran Mike Morrison took over in net for Albany, but let in the game's fifth goal just 33 seconds into his relief appearance when Caputi hit Mark Letestu on a 2-on-1 rush for a backdoor finish. Conor's second goal of the night stretched the home team's lead to 6-0 at 6:35 of the second period. Nick Dodge finally put the River Rats on the board with a shorthanded tally from Steven Goertzen at 8:24.

Conor completed his hat trick just 14 seconds into the third period on a partial breakaway to make it a 7-1 Penguins lead. Albany leading scorer Jerome Samson added his 22nd goal of the season on the power play from Zach Boychuk at 2:01, but Dustin Jeffrey made it an 8-2 game less than a minute and a half later. Coner recorded his sixth point of the night with an assist on the game's final goal, a power play strike by Caputi at 11:11. Brad Thiessen stopped 30-of-32 shots faced in the game to earn the win as the Penguins improved to 27-26-1-1 this season. Peters allowed four goals on 16 shots in 21:04 of action, and Morrison let in five goals on 20 shots through the final 38:56 as the River Rats fell to 29-21-3-3 this year. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton out-shot Albany 36-32 in the game and went 2-for-7 on the power play, while the River Rats were 1-for-6 on the man-advantage.
