February 17, 2010 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Binghamton Senators News Release
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -The Binghamton Senators and the Adirondack Phantoms entered this evening's game separated in the East Division standings by only three points. Although both teams need every point they can get for the Calder Cup playoffs push, Adirondack would be the only team to leave the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena with any as they defeated the B-Sens in regulation 4-3.
The Phantoms Mike Pyorala struck first, putting the Phantoms on the board 1-0 on a shorthanded breakaway at 13:05 of the first period. The puck snuck past Senators defensemen, Derek Smith, where Pyorala picked it up, skating in on Mike Brodeur, pushing the puck right under his pads. Jared Ross picked up the lone assist.
Binghamton answered right back at 14:22 of the first period to tie the score. Keegan Dansereau deflected in a perfect shot from Binghamton defenseman Paul Baier. Baier and Zack Smith earned the assists, each earning points in their second consecutive game.
Adirondack regained the lead, 2-1, just 1:34 into the second period. Jon Matsumoto picked up a pass from Andreas Nodl, snipering it past Brodeur's left shoulder. Nodl and David Laliberte were each credited with an assist.
At 13:39 of the second, B-Sens forward Josh Hennessy was able to stick handle around the Phantoms defense, shooting the puck past Johan Backlund to tie the game 2-2 on the power play. Dansereau and Zack Smith earned their second assists of the evening on Hennessy's tally.
16:16 of the second the Phantoms' Logan Stephenson recorded his first goal of the season on an unassisted breakaway to give the Phantoms the 3-2 lead.
The Phantoms quickly jumped ahead 4-2, just 2:54 into the third period. Sean Curry took a shot from the point and was able to score on the power play. Marc-Andre Bourdon was the only assist.
Binghamton's Martin St. Pierre scored their second power play goal of the night, just shy of the 13 minute mark. St. Pierre found the puck in a scramble around the net and shot it top shelf to make the score 4-3. Ryan Keller and Derek Smith were credited with the assists. The comeback fell short though as the game ended in favor of the Phantoms.
The B-Sens return to the ice Friday as they host the Worchester Sharks at 7:05 p.m. United Health Services will be presenting "I Heart Hockey" night to help promote the UHS foundation and UHS's heart health programs. Also, the B-Sens will be wearing special 1980 USA hockey jerseys to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the "Miracle on Ice". Tickets are $17.75 for side seating, $16.75 for end seating. Fans can purchase tickets at www.ticketmaster.com, by phone at 1-800-745-3000 or in person at the Binghamton Senators' executive office or the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena box office.
