Coach's Corner with the Baltimore Mariners' Chris Simpson: Week 2
February 17, 2010 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Abbotsford Heat News Release
BALTIMORE, MD (February 17, 2010) - There is a freshness to the opening of training camp. Goals and expectations are set. Plans and strategies are implemented. Players and staff, after the anticipation felt throughout the fall and winter, can get to the business at hand; a journey to the AIFA Championship. Camp is the next step in the marathon we call "The Season".
Finding the right fit and the right mix of talent and personnel is a process we undertake when recruiting and signing players. Training camp is where we truly find out if what we have on paper translates to the football field. When the pads come on, we separate the pretenders from the contenders and the men from the boys.
We started a tradition last season of bringing the players in, putting them up in a hotel, and spend an entire weekend with just them and football. We will continue that tradition this season. We have both local and out of town players that includes a great mixture of returning and new talent. The opening of camp gives the staff and players an opportunity to get to know each other and provides a controlled environment in which to build a true team.
We look at four things when we take the field for that first weekend; Chemistry, Conditioning, Coachability and Competition. The player who is in condition and coachable will earn a spot on the team. The player who truly competes will earn a starting job. The player who sets aside his own personal success to ensure the success of the team wins championships. I don't want all-stars. I want champions.
Our squad last season had great chemistry and a strong sense of purpose. We want to build on that foundation. Make it stronger and woven tighter. The great automotive manufacturer Henry Ford once stated, "Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success." That pretty much sums up our mission during training camp.
