February 17, 2010 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Binghamton Senators News Release
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Binghamton Senators announced today that they will wear 1980 Team USA hockey jerseys this Friday, Feb. 19 as they play the Worcester Sharks. The jerseys are worn to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the 1980 United States Olympic Ice Hockey Team and the "Miracle on Ice".
The "Miracle on Ice" was a medal-round men's ice hockey game in the 1980 Olympics on Feb. 22 in Lake Placid, N.Y. in which the United States Olympic Ice Hockey Team defeated the Soviet Union, a team considered the best in the world and heavily favored, to advance to a medal round. The team would go on to defeat Finland in their final match to win the gold medal.
Post game the jerseys will be auctioned off live, with proceeds going to benefit the Broome Sports Foundation and the United Health Services Foundation.
The Broome Sports Foundation is comprised of area business professionals who donate their time to aid the Binghamton community. The foundation works closely with the Binghamton Senators and has raised thousands of dollars to benefit youth hockey, Special Olympics and many other worthwhile groups. The foundation also funds the Tommy Mitchell Memorial Scholarship Fund. The scholarship was established in memory of Tommy Mitchell, who was involved in a fatal motor vehicle accident in 1986 on the way to a pee wee hockey game. Since its inception, yearly college scholarships are awarded in Tommy's honor to local student athletes for the purpose of furthering their education.
United Health Services and its ancestral organizations have been delivering high quality health care for over 120 years. United Health Services provides close to $22 million worth of free health care services to the poor, needy and medically indigent members of the Binghamton community each year. The United Health Services Foundation raises funds for state-of-the-art equipment, patient care facilities and community outreach programs that help United Health Services Hospitals (Wilson Medical Center and Binghamton General Hospital) remain a leading provider of medical care in the community.
The evening's game, sponsored by United Health Services, begins at 7:05 p.m. Tickets are $17.75 for side seating, $16.75 for end seating. Fans can purchase tickets at www.ticketmaster.com, by phone at 1-800-745-3000 or in person at the Binghamton Senators' executive office or the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena box office.
