Moose Clipped By Marlies 4-3

February 17, 2010 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Manitoba Moose News Release

The Manitoba Moose dropped a 4-3 decision to the Toronto Marlies on Wednesday night in their first meeting at the Ricoh Coliseum this season. The Moose broke onto the scoreboard first, but Toronto scored four-consecutive markers to earn two points over their North Division rival. Michael Grabner, Marco Rosa and Sergei Shirokov all scored for Manitoba while Cory Schneider stopped 29 of 33 attempts.

The Moose didn't waste any time on Wednesday night, scoring the opening goal a mere 11 seconds into the game. Manitoba stormed into Toronto's zone on an odd man rush allowing Michael Grabner to extend his goal-streak to four consecutive games when he beat starting goaltender Joey MacDonald on his glove side.

Phil Oreskovic's hooking penalty at 3:11 put Manitoba on the first powerplay of the night. The visitors were able to bring their shot count to seven on the man-advantage, but couldn't hit the back of the net during the short two-minutes.

The Moose returned the favor when Nikita Kashirsky was penalized for hooking at 6:03. Before the Marlies could get their powerplay together, Brett Festerling evened the odds with a roughing penalty of his own at 6:19. After Kashirsky was released, Manitoba benefited from their 16 second advantage. Marco Rosa snapped the puck from inside the red circle and over MacDonald's shoulder to put the Moose in a 2-0 lead with his team-leading 19th goal.

With Brain Salcido serving time for tripping at 8:41 the Marlies broke their goose-egg. After winning the face-off in their defensive zone, Kyle Calder redirected a slapshot from the point into the net for a 2-1 tally.

Near the midway point of the game, the Moose and Marlies were even in the shot department with 19 attempts each.

During a delayed penalty call, late in the second period, the Marlies capitalized. Tim Brent took the puck, danced around the defenceman and shoveled the puck under Schneider to knot the game at two at 16:59.

With Jonas Frogren serving time for kneeing, the Moose were on the fifth powerplay of the night. Even though the Moose had the luxury of an extra-attacker, a defensive slip up sent two Marlies charging towards Schneider's net on a shorthanded surge. Phil Oreskovic smacked the puck into the open back door to put his team in the lead, 3-2.

Tim Brent extended his club's lead and scored his second of the night when he wrapped the puck around a sprawled Schneider at 4:23 of the final frame.

The Moose weren't out of fight, however, as Sergei Shirokov surged to the net and tucked the puck under MacDonald's glove at 12:23. Time expired before Manitoba could score another goal and the Marlies earned a 4-3 victory over the visiting Moose.
