SAN ANTONIO, TX - Goaltender Steve Passmore stopped 4-of-5 shots in the shootout to lifted the San Antonio Rampage over the Manchester Monarchs, 4-3, in a shootout in front of a crowd of 4,824 at the SBC Center on Friday night. The Monarchs (1-2-1-0, 3 points) are tied for fifth place in the Atlantic Division. With the win, the Rampage (4-4-0-0, 8 points) move into third place in the West Division.
Left wing Steve Gainey put the Rampage on the board at 1:53 of the first period with a power play goal. Right wing Randall Gelech fed the puck to Gainey, who was on Monarchs goaltender Adam Hauser's doorstep and poked it in. Defenseman Matt Jones also assisted on Gainey's fifth of the year.
At 12:46 of the first period, Monarchs rookie right wing Konstantin Pushkarev skated down the right side and rifled a shot from the right face-off circle and past Rampage goaltender Passmore on his glove side. Pushkarev's second goal of the season came unassisted when the teams were skating four-on-four.
Rampage center Layne Ulmer gave San Antonio a 2-1 lead with his fifth of the season at 7:27 of the second period. The Rampage's second power play goal of the evening came off a bad angle shot as Ulmer threw a wrist shot from the end red line past Hauser. Defenseman Brad Ference and center Mike Podlesak assisted on the goal.
Right wing Lauri Tukonen evened up the game with a shot from the far face-off circle for his second of the season at 19:02 of the second period. Pushkarev slid the puck from the corner to Tukonen who scored top-shelf on Passmore. Defenseman Doug Nolan assisted on the goal.
Podlesak scored his second of the year, a power play goal at 5:35 of the third period. Hauser stopped Ulmer's initial shot from the slot but Podlesak was able to find the back of the net with the rebound. Jones earned his second assist of the night.
Left wing Jeff Giuliano pushed the game to overtime with his first of the season at 19:10 of the third period. Right wing Brad Smyth fed the puck to Giuliano as he fired a shot from one knee to tie the game 3-3.
Passmore blanked left wing Noah Clarke, right wing Dany Roussin, left wing Jeff Tambellini and Tukonen in the shootout. Smyth was the only Monarchs player to score in the shootout. The Rampage received shootout goals from center Mike Bishai and Ulmer. Hauser stopped Gainey and Gelech.
