Barons Fall At Rochester, 8-4
October 21, 2005 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Barons News Release
ROCHESTER, NY - Jason Pominville scored five goals, Chris Taylor assisted on six goals, and Derek Roy posted a four-point night as Rochester up-ended the Barons 8-4 in Rochester on Friday night. Steve Bernier extended his point streak for Cleveland scoring a goal and adding an assist for points in five straight games.
The Barons wasted little time quieting the large crowd in Rochester with the game's first goal only 34-seconds into the opening period. Lukas Kaspar rifled a wrist shot over the left shoulder of Amerks' goaltender Jean-Marc Pelletier for the 1-0 lead. The goal by Kaspar was his third of the year and was set up by Shane Joseph and Matt Carkner on a face-off play. Unfortunately the rest of the period was all about Rochester with three unanswered goals to finish the opening frame. Pominville scored his first goal of the night converting a 2-on-1 rush with Taylor. Roy then scored a power play goal to gather Rochester's first lead of the night, 2-1. Pominville finished off the period's scoring with a power play strike for his second of the night.
The two teams skated to an identical second period as Rochester held a 6-2 lead after forty minutes of play. Pominville's third goal of the game came on a power play to extend Rochester's lead 4-1. Kamil Kreps then scored an even strength goal for a 5-1 advantage. The Barons stopped the bleeding momentarily when rookie sensation, Bernier, registered his 3rd goal of the year to trim the lead to 5-2 less than 30-seconds after Kreps scored for the Amerks. The goal by Bernier extended his point streak to five games. Pominville tallied another power play goal for his fourth tally of the night to close out the second period scoring.
The Barons made a valiant effort at a comeback scoring the first two goals of the third period. Grant Stevenson back-handed his 2nd goal of the year past Pelletier at the 5:22 mark to get the Barons within three. Then Josh Hennessy's 1st goal of his rookie season nearly seven minutes later made the game 6-4 in favor of Rochester. The Amerks put an end to any comeback thoughts with another power play goal from Pominville with 2:20 remaining in regulation. Kreps then closed out the scoring with his second goal of the game coming with just 33-seconds remaining on the night.
Rochester converted on five of six power play chances, while shutting out the Barons' six power play attempts. Taylor (6-assists) and Pominville (5-goals) both tied franchise records for their game totals.
The Barons play their second of a four-game road swing tomorrow night at Copps Coliseum in Hamilton, Ontario. The Barons do not return home until November 1st when they host the Hershey Bears at 7 O'clock. Tickets for all regular season games are on sale now and group discounted tickets are available by calling the Barons at 216-420-0000.
