Peoria Rivermen News Release
Winnipeg, MB - The Peoria Rivermen defeated the Manitoba Moose by a score of 4-0 on Friday night at the MTS Centre. Right wing Mike Glumac powered the Peoria offense with two goals, and left wing Peter Sejna chipped in two assists. At the other end of the ice, Rivermen goalie Curtis Sanford stood tall in net and made 16 saves to record a shutout. Peoria claimed its 2005-06 season series with Manitoba with the win, going 3-1-0-0 in four games versus the Moose.
This contest started out slowly, as both teams tried to get a feel for the opponent and the game. The first shot of the game, in fact, did not come until more than two and one-half minutes had elapsed in the first period.
Almost three-fourths of the first period elapsed before either team scored a goal. With the referee poised to whistle Manitoba for a penalty, Peoria controlled the puck in the Manitoba zone, and Rivermen goaltender Curtis Sanford skated off in favor of an extra attacker. Center Ryan Ramsay took the puck and exchanged a pass with winger Peter Sejna as Sejna moved through the left circle. Sejna then dished off the puck to his fellow winger Mike Glumac, who unleashed a quick shot from the right point that ricocheted off of Moose netminder Robert McVicar's blocker and found its way into the top right corner of the goal. The lamp-lighter staked the Rivermen to a 1-0 lead at the 14:34 mark.
Following that goal, the Rivermen and the Moose returned to their close, scoreless play. Just before the opening frame was to expire, however, the Rivermen got another goal. Working hard in the Manitoba zone, rookie right wing Lee Stempniak sent a pass to defenseman Mike Mottau near the blueline. Mottau then shoveled a back-handed shot on net, and Jon DiSalvatore tipped it past McVicar to put Peoria up 2-0 with just 1.2 seconds remaining in the first.
The second period saw no goals scored by either team but featured some good action. Both teams had opportunities to score but failed to convert them. The Rivermen lead remained 2-0 after two periods of play, and the Rivermen held a 19-13 advantage in shots on goal.
Looking to capitalize on a minor penalty called on the Moose at the end of the second period, the Rivermen came out firing in the third period. Peoria first controlled the puck along the perimeter of the Manitoba zone before it got caught in a throng of players in the right corner. Rivermen center Trent Whitfield then dragged it out of the corner and fired it at Manitoba's McVicar, who stopped the shot but left a rebound. Stationed near the crease, right wing Mike Glumac pounced on the loose puck and popped it up over the right shoulder of the Moose goalie to extend Peoria's lead to 3-0 only one minute into the third period.
The Rivermen lead grew even larger at 15:25. On a three-on-two break with Gavin Morgan and Brett Scheffelmaier, winger Brendan Brooks charged wide down the right wing and drilled home a low slap shot to the Moose goalie's stick side. The marker made it 4-0 in favor of Peoria.
As the final minutes of regulation ticked away, the Rivermen continued to hold the Moose at bay. When the final horn sounded, the Rivermen had a 4-0 win, and Curtis Sanford had recorded a 16-save shutout, the first whitewash in the history of the American Hockey League Peoria Rivermen.
