Rampage Win in Shootout, 4-3
October 21, 2005 - American Hockey League (AHL)
San Antonio Rampage News Release
Layne Ulmer and Martin Podlesak each registered a goal and an assist while Matt Jones tallied a pair of assists to help the San Antonio Rampage match their best home opening streak as they defeated the Manchester Monarchs with a 4-3 shootout win Friday night at the SBC Center.
All three Rampage regulation goals came on the power-play.
Ulmer and Mike Bishai scored the shootout goals to give the Rampage a 4-1-0-0 home opening record, matching the 2003-04 season's record, while goaltender Steve Passmore stopped four of five shootout attempts.
Passmore collected his first win since Oct. 14 for his fourth win of the season.
Rampage's top scorer Steve Gainey extended his point streak to three games scoring his 10th point of the season early in the opening period against Los Angeles Kings prospect Adam Hauser (24 saves off 27 shots). Gainey's power-play goal at the 1:53 mark set a club season record for fastest goal from start of the game as Randall Gelech and Matt Jones received the helpers.
Manchester would play catch up each time San Antonio scored, tying the game with less than a minute with their final two goals.
After Podlesak assisted on Ulmer's fifth goal of the season at 7:57 in the second period, the 6-foot-6 center would use his reach to punch in a loose puck to give the Rampage a 3-2 lead at 5:35 in the third.
