
Rampage Sign Koehler, Smith to PTOs

SAN ANTONIO â Jan. 12, 2004 â San Antonio Rampage General Manager Bobby Jay announced today that the American Hockey League club signed forwards Greg Koehler and Mark Smith to professional tryouts (PTO). At the same time, the Rampage reassigned center Riley Nelson to Colorado of the Central Hockey League (CHL).
Koehler, 28, has played 34 games with the Elmira Jackals of the United Hockey League (UHL) and ranks 10th (tied) among UHL leading scorers with 43 points (18-25= 43 pts.). The 6-foot-2, 195-pound center leads the Jackals with 18 goals and 25 assists. The Scarborough, Ontario native has also appeared in two games with the Syracuse Crunch (AHL) this season, recording zero points. Koehler has played in 165 AHL career games, compiling 47-45-92 totals and 202 penalty minutes. During the 2000-01 season with Carolina Hurricanes' top affiliate Cincinnati Cyclones (of the now-defunct International Hockey League), Koehler amassed 35 goals and 71 points in 80 games.
Smith, 25, has appeared in 31 games with the Alaska Aces of the ECHL this season and ranks fourth on the club with 14-20-34 totals. The 5-foot-10, 175-pound center from Kelowna, British Columbia has scored at least 20 goals in each of his three professional seasons, starting in 2000 with Odessa of the now-defunct Western Professional Hockey League and in 2001-02, when he tallied 21 goals and 16 assists in only 29 games for Knoxville in the United Hockey League. Last season, Smith finished a point shy of the Lexington Men O'War (ECHL) team scoring lead with 22 goals and 32 assists.
Nelson, 26, played four games with San Antonio recording zero points. The center from Cranbrook, British Columbia has appeared in 32 career AHL games, registering four goals and 11 points with 11 penalty minutes. He was recalled to the San Antonio on Jan. 1, 2004.
The Rampage host West Division rival Grand Rapids tomorrow and Utah on Thurs., Jan. 15 before heading into a home-and-home series against Houston on Fri., Jan. 16. All games are scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
