Binghamton Senators News Release
LAST WEEK: The Sens (16-16-4-2) enter the week with 38 points and a share of fifth place in the East Division with the Norfolk Admirals following a 1-1-1 showing last week.
FRIDAY, JAN. 9th vs. ALBANY (5-4 W): The Sens set a franchise record with five second period goals and then held on for the win as the Rats rallied for three third period markers. Making their Binghamton debuts, MIKE BROWN (1+2) and BRAD TAPPER (1+1) led a sweep of the game's three stars while DENIS HAMEL (1+2) increased his team-leading goal and point totals to 15 and 31 respectively. The Sens outshot the River Rats 44-16, setting a club mark for fewest shots allowed to an opponent in a game and the club struck for two power play goals in a game (2x7) for the first time since November 22nd while the penalty kill snuffed out its only shorthanded chance to run its streak to 34 straight kills. BILLY THOMPSON (12 saves) picked up the win in goal.
SATURDAY, JAN. 10th vs. PHILADELPHIA (1-2 L): Before a record-tying ninth sellout (4,717) of the year, the Phantoms shaded the Sens in a surprisingly calm affair that featured just 34 combined penalty minutes after the record-setting 373 the teams put on the board in their previous meeting December 28th in Philladelphia. Captain CHRIS KELLY notched Binghamton's only goal on a power play tip of a JULIEN VAUCLAIR point blast. RAY EMERY stopped 28 shots, including 13 in the final period, but it was an IAN MacNEIL strike at 11:26 of the second period that was the difference. Binghamton was outshot 30-27 on the night and was 1x4 on the power play. The shorthanded crew was perfect again (3x3) and 37 of their last 37.
SUNDAY, JAN. 11th @ HERSHEY (2-2 ot T): The Bears and the Sens went to overtime for the second time in as many meeting this year, but goaltending helped to put this one in the books as an overtime standoff. Star of the Game RAY EMERY made a season-high 45 saves, including seven in overtime, to help the Sens gain a point in the standings. ALEXANDRE GIROUX single handedly dug Binghamton out of a 2-0 hole as he netted both Senator goals to match the Bears' ERIC PERRIN effort. TOM LAWSON made 44 saves for Hershey as Binghamton tied a franchise record with 46 shots on goal. Binghamton converted one of six power play chances while the penalty kill went 2x3, allowing a 5x3 goal in the firs the period to snap its streak at 37 consecutive kills.
THIS WEEK: Binghamton continues a stretch of eight of nine contests at home with a three-game homestand Wednesday through Saturday before traveling to Providence for a Martin Luther King Day matinee.
WEDENSDAY, JAN. 14th vs. SYRACUSE (7:05 p.m.): Press & Sun Bulletin Score-4 Fun Pack Night The Sens and Crunch meet for the fourth time this season with Binghamton taking two straight on home ice after dropping the first get-together in Syracuse October 25th. JOSH LANGFELD, CHRIS KELLY, and DENIS HAMEL lead the Sens in series scoring with three points each while four Crunch skaters have two points each. Binghamton is 7-3-1 all-time versus the Syracuse including a 4-2 mark at the Arena.
FRIDAY, JAN. 15th vs. ALBANY (7:05 p.m.): Roberts Eye Care Associates Beach Night The River Rats come to town for a second straight Friday encounter after last week's 5-4 Sens victory. It will mark the sixth of ten regular season meetings with Binghamton's most frequent opponent on their schedule. The season series is tied at 2-2-1 while Binghamton has an 8-2-3 all-time advantage. On the strength of his three point night in the last meeting Friday, DENIS HAMEL leads the Sens in series scoring with six points (2+4) while CRAIG DARBY is the leading point-getter overall with seven (3+4). 14 of the series' combined 31 goals have come on special teams (eight power play and six shorthanded).
MONDAY, JAN. 19th @ PROVIDENCE (1:05 p.m.): Binghamton heads to Providence for its only visit to the Dunkin Donuts Center this season. The teams will close out the brief season series when the Bruins come to Binghamton on February 21st. The teams split a pair of games last season with the Bruins taking a 6-4 decision at the Arena October 30, 2002, before the Sens returned the favor on the final day of the regular season (April 6, 2003) in an 8-5 shootout in Providence.
