Rampage Open Preseason with 2-1 Shootout Win over OKC

CEDAR PARK, Texas (September 28, 2013) - The San Antonio Rampage defeated the Oklahoma City Barons, 2-1, in a shootout in their first preseason game of the year on Saturday at Cedar Park Center.

Jared Gomes tallied the game-tying goal with 12.9 seconds remaining in regulation and notched the lone goal of the shootout to give San Antonio the win in front of 2,613 fans at Cedar Park Center.

Rampage netminder Dov Grumet-Morris made 21 saves in regulation and turned aside all five Oklahoma City shooters in the shootout.

The two teams combined for 22 penalties in the contest, but neither was able to light the lamp on the power play. San Antonio was 0-for-7 on the power play, while Oklahoma City was 0-for-9 with the man advantage.

San Antonio had a golden opportunity on the power play at the midway mark of the period when Rampage forward Greg Rallo ripped off a shot from the point. Oklahoma City netminder Richard Bachman surrendered a big rebound, but the Rampage were unable to capitalize on the chance.

Both teams committed four penalties in the opening frame, but neither was able convert with the man advantage.

Early in the second period, Rampage forward Logan Shaw was sent scrambling over Bachman, chasing a Greg Zanon rebound that was brushed off at the last second by the Barons' goalie.

Soon after, the period once again descended into a constant back-and-forth of penalties. After a Barons goalie change that switched out Bachman for Ty Rimmer, Oklahoma City's Ryan Martindale broke the stalemate at the midway mark. The center streaked between two San Antonio defenders and deked Grumet-Morris before depositing the puck into the back of the net.

San Antonio was tested late in the period with a 5-on-3 kill followed by a 5-on-4 kill, but Grumet-Morris stood tall in the net, making a stick save up high, and then a gorgeous post-to-post save to keep the Rampage at a one-goal deficit.

With a minute left on the clock, Jack Combs fed a slick pass to the slot that was picked up by Jon Matsumoto, but the center was unable to cash in, letting the time run out with Oklahoma City still holding a 1-0 lead after 40 minutes of action.

Within minutes of the whistle blowing to mark the start of the third period, the Rampage were granted with their best offensive chance of the game when a power play quickly developed into a 5-on-3. Though the Barons were able to kill it off, the Rampage had several excellent chances that had Rimmer all over the net trying to preserve the Barons lead.

Tony Turgeon, in his first professional game, and first as a winger, dropped the gloves with Oklahoma City's Erick Lizon midway through the third period. The two went blow for blow, until Turgeon finally got the upper hand and sent Lizon to the ice.

With an empty net and 12.9 seconds remaining, Gomes crashed the net and snuck one past Rimmer. Gomes' first of the preseason was assisted by Vincent Trocheck and Combs, effectively sending the game into overtime.

Neither team was able to light the lamp in overtime, thus sending the game one step further into a shootout.

The shootout went goalless until the third round when Gomes beat Rimmer. His tally became the eventual winner as Grumet-Morris turned aside all five Barons shooters. The Rampage skated away with a 2-1 win, outshooting the Barons 30-22.

The Rampage return to Cedar Park Center tomorrow to face off against in-state rival Texas Stars at 5 p.m. They open the 2013-14 AHL regular season at AT&T Center on Friday, October 4, when they host the Chicago Wolves.
