St. John's IceCaps News Release
CLARENVILLE, NL - The IceCaps fell to the Syracuse Crunch for the second time in three nights, dropping a 1-0 decision in Game 2 of the Mary's Cup from the Clarenville Events Centre.
Riku Helenius stopped all 27 shots he faced for the shutout while Geoff Walker notched the game's only goal on a two-man advantage late in the first period.
The two teams appeared set to head to the dressing rooms in a scoreless tie after 20 minutes until the IceCaps ran into some penalty trouble late in the frame and the Crunch capitalized. With Patrick Cullity and Cody Lampl in the box for St. John's, Walker potted a power play tally to open the scoring. Joey Mormina's drive from the point missed wide but caromed off the end boards out front to Walker, who beat Olkinuora to make it 1-0.
St. John's nearly tied things up early in the third when defeceman Jordan Hill found himself in alone on Helenius and snapped a shot that beat the Crunch netminder. However, his shot rang off the outside of the post and stayed out, and the IceCaps couldn't get on the scoresheet the rest of the way.
Game 3 of the Mary's Cup goes Sunday at 4:00 p.m. NT at Mile One Centre. Catch all the action with play-by-play broadcaster Brian Rogers at stjohnsicecaps.com or on 930AM This Is Newfoundland Labrador. Pregame show gets underway at 3:30.
