Worcester Sharks News Release

PROVIDENCE, RI - The Worcester Sharks (1-2-0-0) dropped a 3-1 decision to the Providence Bruins (1-1-0-0) in exhibition play in front of a nice crowd at the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence, RI on Saturday afternoon.

Konrad Abeltshauser scored in his 2nd consecutive game for the Sharks while J.P. Anderson had a strong game in net, allowing just two goals on 25 shots for the loss. Wayne Simpson, Zach Trotman, and former Sharks captain Mike Moore scored for the Bruins while Malcolm Subban made 29 saves in the Bruins victory. The Sharks closed out their three game exhibition schedule with a 1-2-0-0 record and open the 2013-14 regular season on Saturday, Oct 12 at Springfield vs. the Falcons.

Much like last night, the Sharks came out buzzing in the opening period and went ahead at 4:51 after a Konrad Abeltshauser (2nd) shot from the left point snuck its way through traffic and past Malcolm Subban. The Sharks had several chances to take a two goal lead in the first, hitting the post three separate occasions while J.P. Anderson held down the fort for Worcester with seven saves. Worcester led 1-0 through 20 minutes and outshot Providence 12-7.

The Bruins would tie the score after the midway point of the game as Wayne Simpson (1st) tapped home a nice cross the crease pass from defenseman David Warsofsky at 10:54. A few minutes later, J.P. Anderson made a great stop on an Alexander Khokhlachev breakaway chance to keep the score even at 1-1. Collin Bowman (1st FM) and Tyler Randell (1st FM) dropped the mitts behind the Sharks net at 14:03 with Randell getting the best of the fight. Moments later, veteran Rob Davison (1st FM) buried a Bruin along the boards inside the Providence zone which led to a scrap with Igor Gongalsky (1st FM) at 16:27 Providence went ahead 2-1 at 17:14 on the power play after Zach Trotman's laser from the left point snuck through the pads of Anderson. Worcester trailed 2-1 after 40 minutes despite outshooting the Bruins 22-18.

Jimmy Bonneau (1st FM) and Tyler Randell (2nd FM) had a long spirited bout at 2:25 to kick off the third period of play as the Sharks seemed unhappy with Randell after his fight with Bowman. Adam Comrie hit the post with two minutes remaining and former Sharks captain Mike Moore scored an empty netter with 4.6 seconds left to lead the Bruins to a 3-1 win.
